Riddle me this?!
I recently bought a Wthby Accumark chambered in .257 Wthby Mag. I got it set up , took it out for the first time, zeroed it and in the process, discovered that it has what I consider to be UNACCEPTABLE muzzle jump! [V] The rifle has a 26" stainless fluted barrel, so, I really don't think a muzzle-brake is the answer to my problem. AND I'm pretty sure a fluted barrel cannot be Magna-ported, so, I would surely appreciate any suggestions as to how I might be able to reduce the muzzle jump? I've been shooting 100 gr spire points (factory loads) for what's it's worth.

Never saw one in person but i did a gb search and a few of them i see comes with an accubreak [ muzzle break ] this may be somthing you want to look into. heres one example http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=25389496

Mauser, thanks for the reply! I should have been more precise in describing my quandry: because the rifle has a stainless (Rather heavy) barrel, which is 26" (kinda long) what I DON'T want to do at this point is add length or weight to the front end of this thing. Incidentally, I was Really surprised at the muzzle jump on this rifle, I expected much less, more along the lines of an'06 or something, especially since the recoil is fairly minimal. I'm really stumped as to what options I may have! 0 -

Trap, can Magna-port do their thing on a fluted barrel? That was my first choice, but was under the impression that a fluted barrel was "un-doable" Please clarify and thanx for the reply! 0 -
[8D]You've got a synthetic stock, so it probably weighs less than 7lbs and skinny on the forearm. Either get a wood stock or use forward sling grip-it will take practice to maintain group consistancy![:p][:p][:p][:D]

Get a gunsmith to counterbore the rifling back an inch or so and have a couple or three vertical gas ports (holes) drilled into the top of the barrel. You shouldn't lose all that much speed and the upward blast should hold your muzzel down. These can be drilled into the OD or the bottom of the flute depending........ 0 -
James, thanks for the reply. The rifle is NOT light in any respect, in fact it weighs in at around 10 lbs ! The problem is NOT accuracy or consistency, it is muzzle jump. Because it has a long, rather heavy barrel already I DO NOT want to add length or weight to the rifle. BUT the muzzle jump (not recoil) seems to be way out of proportion to the rest of the formula (weight of rifle w/scope and stainless barrel, caliber, specific load, etc). I think I understand you to be suggesting using the sling to "control" the muzzle? What I'm looking for is a way to REDUCE the muzzle jump initially. Thanx again! 0 -
Where was it being rested when this occured? Was the barrel making contact with anything? Is the barrel floated or does it have a foreward contact point? Are the stock screws tight?
were you using wthby factory ammo? if so,.remember it is a MAX load and can contribute to that.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

I have a MarkV in 257 and when it had a factory barrel on it, it was really light and had the resultant muzzle jump. It seems this is due mofre to the jet propelled effect of the gases than to the actual recoil of the bullet. Prior to having it barrelled to a 28" heavy taper with reduced leade dimensions, I reduced the jump by handloading with a quicker powder- NOT fast, just slightly quicker- H or IMR 4350 will get velocities of 4831, 7828, 870, etc, with much less powder and much less jump. I'd give that a try before making adjustments in the rifle. 0 -

I don't see why there should be any problem, it's done by Electrical Discharge Machining. Call or e-mail them and ask! http://www.magnaport.com/
