If it walks like a Makarov....
What do I have? I went to the Makarov website and could not get an answer. It's a P 64, .9X18, pocket semi-auto, with Radom Poland under the front of the muzzle. It says "Makarov" on one side of the receiver, but the Mak info center says, "No. No Makarov parts will fit it." The center explains that the "Makarov" refers to the caliber .9X18.
So what kind of pistol is it?

It's a Polish Makarov. They called it the P64. It's not either/or, it's both.

The only thing the P64 and Makarov share in common is the caliber. Both designs are simplified and cheaper versions of the Walther PP, but the P64 comes closer to the design and quality of the gun from which they were copied. I feel they are both excellent guns for the money, and would lean towards the P64 if I were looking for a concealed carry gun as they are much smaller.

Meunke and Kydster, and anyone else interested - Thanks for the info. I wondered when Makarov didn't seem to want to list it among the orthodox models. You've made me feel better about it.
The P64's recoil is straight back against the web of the hand, rather than upwards. Its flat design and rounded top make an easy backup carry. Not that I get in many gunfights as a professor, nor can I legally carry it at or near school.

You are more than welcome! I don't think you can go wrong with either, and the 9mm Mak is a good round that bridges the gap between 380 ACP and 9mm Luger very nicely. Also, it's good to see that not all those involved with higher learning have succumbed to the fear mongering of the NEA and the rest of the know-nothing FOPs I generally dealt with while in college! The best professor I ever had? Steven Ambrose.

Kydstr - If I had a spare lifetime, I think I'd study history. Especially Custer and the plains evolution in the second half of the 19th century, as well as the other areas Steven Ambrose highlighted.
You are so blessed to have studied with him. I became his devoted reader in the late 90's, ranging from the Lewis & Clark book and other works, to D-Day.

I was indeed blessed to have had Ambrose on sabbatical and teaching at the University of Iowa. He was there for 1 semester, and I had the good fortune to have an advisor who knew of him and insisted I take BOTH of the classes offered under his tutlage...never had better classes my whole time in school! At the start of this time I was your average "16 Mohawk liberal commie type pinko...at the end of the time, I still had the big blue Mohawk, but an entirely new attitude and grasp on US history and life in general. Prof. Ambrose was the kind of guy that would pound the HELL out of you until you understood his drift, and I will say very, very few left his classes unchanged. 'The Constitution is a living document... that thanks to Mr. Carter is sadly now on life support!' was something I heard him say more than once. No room in his life for the liberals of the world. I regret many things about various choices I made during that time in my life; taking classes with Prof. Ambrose was one of the best choices I ever made and his impact on my thinking will be with me until the day I die. The world is poorer for having lost him.

Cool.
Now, here's another pair of P 64 questions ...don't know if you have the answer. My Polish Mak has mags that hold six rounds. So it's 6 + 1. Is that correct?
Also, with dry-firing on a thread, I read in GUN TESTS that too much of it is bad (of course). But is the P 64 any more delicate than comparable models?0 -
It should be noted again that the P64 is no Makarov. It only shoots the same ammo. All true Makarovs, be they Russian, German, Chinese, or Bulgarian, have interchangeable parts. Non-Makarov pistols in 9x18 have been made in Czechoslovakia (CZ-83), Hungary (PA-63, SMC-918 and others), and Poland (P-64 and others), but none of them are real Maks. One should be cautious with the P-64, I have personally witnessed a catastrophic failure in one, under otherwise safe conditions, it blew its slide right off. As long as real Maks are available, I wouldn't bother with the Polish ones.
