Regulation Skeet, Trap, Sporting Clays, are all 3 different games. While they share the same targets and throwing machines, the course layouts and target presentation are quite different.

For starting out, general practice and fun shooting a standard 12ga field gun will work fine. If you get $eriou$ about any of the games there are $pecialized gun$ made for each. (Serious money shooters will burn a case (or more) of ammo every day, out of custom hand built guns that can cost as much as a high end luxury car).

in trap, the clays are alway going up and away from you at varying angles, usuall one at a time.Their is a 'doubles' variationn though.
In skeet, the clays are thrown from machines inside 'houses' at varying heights,on either end of the field. You move between the 'houses',and they will come at ya,go away from ya,or cross two of 'em in front of ya.whew.
In sporting clays the clays go staright up ,straight at ya,over your head, and bounce along the ground.they use special clays for this game..very small to standard sized, and extra hard ones called 'rabbits' for the ground bouncers.what a game!
there are variatons on trap and sporting clays at every club.I've heard there is also 'bunker trap'using multiple traps for a real variety of throws.
Hope this helps to expain it.And hope to heck I got it right!:)

Throckmortons' the alias, cas is the game.

skeet is scandanavian for 'shoot'. modern skeet was given its name as a result of a contest. it was named by a woman up around the great lakes and designed by man from massachusettes. its a true american sport. trap is a european sport where a 'live bird' was trapped under a hat with a string attached. when the man was ready to shoot, he'd yell 'pull!' that is.. pull the string. a bird flew, he shot, and hoped it fell within a circle. trap today, uses clay birds, and the trap is a bunker where birds fly out. international trap consists of something like 6 to 10 bunkers and a bird can come from any one of them. its very hard. skeet is where birds fly out of houses or towers. sporting clays is usually in a nature setting where you walk a trail and clays are set up along the entire walk. clays vary in size in sporting clays and go: up, left, right, towards you, away, over you, and roll down the road. each sport requires a special gun designed for the sport. many will say one gun can do it all, which is like buying a rubber boat that can be made into a canoe or a sailboat. it can do it, but not very well. and....if youre playing to win and dont, why bother shooting?[;)] buy the right gun for the sport! hope this helps.
