What's a good source of information on how to completely disassemble and clean a High Standard Supermatic?

there are some hi standard videos floating around the web for GUNSMITHING disassembly. there are some small books some authors have published, but its not really rocket science stuff. for cleaning, taking off slide, bbl, and mag, is about all you need. based on your sight assy screw up...youuuuu ought to stick to basics! its the reason why i like hi stds over all others. basics is all you need. btw...rule of thumb...NEVER pull the trigger with a cocked hammer and the slide off. it will crack the frame forward of the impact point. 0 -
I got a set of replacement springs for the model 107 and wanted to put them in. Besides, I enjoy ripping my 1911 apart and putting it back together and though it might be a good idea if I could do that with the HS too. With the 1911, I take it down completely, every little pin and spring, and clean and lube them every 1000 rounds or so. 0 -
Hello there are 2 small springs you need to look out for. One on each side of pistol There is a plate on the left side that is held on by 1 screw this covers and contains the safety and trigger to sear pull bar this bar is returned forward by a small flat spring that is shaped like a U it just sets there and is easy to loose. The other is on the right side and RETURNS the slide stop it goes in a hole in the slide stop and easy to kink . I bet BOBSKI never lost either one. Cheers Karl 0 -
its not an easy task to take on. mistakes per part can be costly. those little springs go for 5.00 ea plus ship! ive never lost one of those springs, because when it would fly...i was so mad, i never stopped until i found it and then made a few homemade gizmos to catch them for the next operation. personally, i would shoot the gun and if everything works, leave it alone. tinkering can ruin your day and cleaning a hi std down to parade rest every 1000 rounds is overkill. the gun wasnt designed to be taken apart that often and doing so can ruin tight fits to pins and screws etc... but anyway, if you must, have at it. best way to do it is: do it, lose some parts, screw the gun up, and then face the old army saying: 'if its not broken, dont fix it.' taking apart slides, triggers, and sears is not the best habit to get into. they can be taken down, but the gun was really designed not be. its that good. and being a 103, heck, 44 years? it has lasted this long for a reason. it was well built. ping and punch pins and you can hack a perfect gun up real quick and kiss your investment goodbye. all the guns i worked on were orphan guns that people ruined and i returned them back to original and correct working order. i never worked on my guns just to work on them. the only thing i take apart on a common basis, is the magazine as per hi stds recomendation every 300 rounds. to clean the frame, all i do is use gunscrubber with the grips off once maybe every year of heavy shooting(300 rounds a week x50 weeks) and as perry says, those springs on the slide catch and sear will fly if youre not on top of it. bottom line from a guy who has owned every hi std made...'dont go past taking the slide, mag, bbl, and grips off unless something is broken or malfunctiong on the gun.' btw...have you figured out how to adjust your sear yet? good luck! 0 -
I'll take your advice about not cleaning it like my 1911, but I still need to replace the set of springs I bought for it. The slide and firing pin at the very least. And this is on the 107, the 103 seems to be doing well on its own. The 107 doesn't have enough tension in the slide to strip a round and chamber it fully. Misfeeds at least 2 of every 10. The slide stops with the bullet halfway in. 0 -

ah..107. ok. springs are easy. its just a matter of a few push pins. just remember, they go in and come out only one way. on the misfeed, i really dont think its the spring. it sounds like a classic mag problem. go to www.highstandard.com and review the mag mod note. try it on your mags. is the bullet striking the top of the chamber or is it just not stripping off? 0 -
OK, got the firing pin spring replaced.
Having trouble getting the recoil spring out, though. I took out the pushpin and now the plug at the front of the slide is free to move, but it only moves inward and only so far. It seems that it would have to come out for the recoil guide and spring to come out too.
What am I missing here?0 -
you are learning the ways of hi std my son. [:D] front top left of slide. see the pin? thats it. ok, now p/n:10090 is the part you are seeing on the breech face. its shaped like a dumb-bell. it holds the spring in. it will come out the face. you probably used too big a punch and burred it. you have to take a thin wood dowel or thin flt scribe and slap the recoil spring guide p/n:1330 from the other end. put a rag over the other end or it will fly to hong kong on ya! be gentile! 0 -

With your help, got the recoil spring replaced. Chambers rounds very nicely now.
On to the next problem...
The extractor won't pull the round back out. If I keep my finger on it when I pull the slide back, the round comes out, if I don't it doesn't. What do I do?0 -
see if your extractor claw (p/n:10270)isnt rounded and if it is, give it a light file. if not rounded, its your extractor spring (pn:1005.) its weak. i saw this one coming. its the tuffest one to do and the hardest one to explain in writing. its truly an operation! its held in by spring tension and a pin with detent,(pn:3003) and like perry said, check your chamber to see if there is a dry fire dent pushed into the chamber from the side. it will cause brass to stick.
