Can I fire 308's in a 30-06 Garand?
I have heard there is some kind of adaptor that once can place in the chamber of the barrel of a Garand to shoot 308's? If so, is it reliable? Safe? Do you also have to alter the en bloc clips to handle the 308's? Does any of this require a gunsmith or is it something I could do myself?

Yes, there is a chamber adaptor that permit .308 to be fired in the M1 rifle. There is also a plastic block sold, that fits in the front part of the mag well to prevent the loading of .30-06 rounds.
However, the US Navy found that this did not work well; the adaptor would often pop out of the chamber. So, they had several thousand rifles rebarreled with 7.62 mm barrels, & found that this was satisfactory.
Today, this is still a common & economical conversion.

I have one that I've used for years with good results. I use temporary Loctite to keep it in place and a broken shell extractor to remove it. I have no problems with '06 cartridges when it is out. 0 -
Need the block adapter for the simplest conversion. Without out it you're trying to put a short action in a long action, and you'll end up with a KABOOM.

I bought one of those adaptors a few years back. I installed it and fired some .308's in one of my Garands. When I tried to remove it with the broken shell extractor it would not budge. It seems it had fire formed itself into the chamber.
I ended up having to take my rifle to a gunsmith to get it removed. I then went out and bought a Springfield M1A.
