mossberg jungle gun
the mossberg jungle gun m9200a1...what do you guys think of it? is it legal for a civilian to own? if so....can it accept a pistol grip?

I just picked one of these up new for $300. Was this a good price? Could a set of 590 ghost rings sights be installed on this gun? 0 -

I don't have any first hand experience with the 9200A1, but have had regular 9200 for quite a while. If you keep it spotlessly clean it works very well. If it gets dirty it will malfunction constantly. According to my 9200 manual, the 9200A1 is recoil operated rather than gas like the standard model, and designed to use only 4 dram equvalent loads(full power buckshot and slugs). If you try using trap loads or low brass game loads it will not function. I kno of no reason the general public couldn't own one. I know of no pistol grips for the 9200 guns, but since they have no recoil tube, I see no reason why you couldn't if you made it yourself.

Dear Mr. XXXXXXXXX:
This refers to your letter of May 30, 2000, in which you asked
about a semiautomatic shotgun.
You describe a Mossberg M9200A1 semiautomatic shotgun which accepts
4 rounds of 2-3/4 or 3-inch ammunition in a fixed tubular magazine,
and having a pistol grip and a folding stock.
As defined in section 921(a)(30)(D), of Title 18, United States
Code, the term "semiautomatic assault weapon" means a semiautomatic
shotgun that has at least 2 of the following features:
(i) a folding or telescoping stock;
(ii) a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the
action of the weapon;
(iii) a fixed magazine capacity in excess of 5 rounds; and;
(iv) an ability to accept a detachable magazine.
The described semiautomatic shotgun has two of the qualifying
features; therefore, it is a semiautomatic assault weapon as
defined.

Section 922(v)(1), of Title 18 U.S.C., provides that it shall be
unlawful for any person to manufacture, transfer or possess a
semiautomatic assault weapon. However, paragraph (v)(3)(D)
provides that the prohibition in paragraph (1) shall not apply to
any semiautomatic shotgun that cannot hold more than 5 rounds of
ammunition in a fixed or detachable magazine.
If the described shotgun cannot hold more than 5 rounds of
ammunition in its fixed magazine, it is excluded from the
prohibition in section 922(v)(1).

Never heard of it, & I couldn't find it listed on the Mossberg website. Where did you see this? You're going to have to give us more information, or provide a link to a description on the Internet.
But, to answer your other question, Mossberg doesn't make any firearms not legal for civilians to own. (Some may require an AOW permit.)

I own one. It is ok for a civilian to own because it is not an assult shotgun unless it has 2 of the features listed by PREBANPART'S post. For example. Mine has 6 round tube magazine but not a pistol grip nor does it take a detachable magazine, and does not have a folding stock.
The gun itself is a decent gun for the money. They only go for about 400.00 to 450.00 It was designed strictly to shoot 00 BUCK so light bird shot will not cycle the gun.
I'd spend a few more bucks and get an 11-87 Police model if I did it again.0 -
Guys, "assault shotguns" are just another part of the expired Assault Weapons Ban law. We don't have to worry about that any more, at least for the next 4 years.

i could find limited info on it on the web thats why i asked if any of you guys owned one or had any experience with them...i love semi auto shottys and was going to buy one that i found brand new for $450 over buying another saiga shotgun...i wanted to knoe the reliability of it...will it fire only 00 buck or does it shoot slugs too? Contacfront...do you like yours?? could anyone provide me with any info on the 11-87 police model as a subsitute? thanks for the replies 0 -

It will fire slugs. The gun came out years ago and was designed for the Army but was not adopted. The specs were for it to shoot 00 Buck and Slugs. The 15.99 brick of shells at Walmart will not cycle this gun reliably. You may get a few through but it will malfunction. I've used it in some of my tactical shotgun courses with 00Buck and Slugs and it does OK.
Pros: Its a cheap fun semi auto 12 gauge.
Cons: Is not reliable with light bird shot so it can get expensive to shoot.
Do I like mine? I haven't sold it yet but it stays in the safe a lot more than my 870.
IMHO, spend the extra 200 to 250 and get yourself the Remington 11-87 Police Model. They are fast and very reliable shotguns. 11-87s keep up with the Benelli and cost a whole lot less. We were shooting steel targets (18" X 18") out to 110 yards and the guys that had them with rifled sights hit them 4 out of 5 times.
