Best semi-auto pistol
What would be the recommendations for the best semi-automatic pistol that meets these criteria?
-ammo is relatively inexpensive (don't plan to reload)
-pretty accurate (plan to do informal target shooting)
-has look and feel of quality
-in the $600 or less price range
-probably should be double action, first shot (household protection)

I would go with something .40 cal. It's more damage than a 9mm and it's not as expensive as .45 cal. The Walther P99 fits that criteria along with a CZ USA CZ2075 rami. The Smith & Wesson Sigma .40 is also in that price range. 0 -
I say find a good deal on a SIG. Either a 9mm(cheap ammo) or .40 cal if you want more umph. I like this one.

Hello I like to have the trigger pull the same for each shoot rather then change from double action first shot "long and heavy " to "short and light" on the second shot. This said I like the 1911 based guns the best by far but if you don't like this type of pistol try a GLOCK I like 45acp compared to the 40 S&W "slow and weak" quote:"PRAISE THE HARDBALL GUN" 0 -
OK!! Since no one jumped on this one already, look at the Tanfoglio pistols (EAA Witness). 10mm might be too expensive to shoot very often, but 45 acp and 40 Smith are fairly inexpensive and readilly available. Go to www.EAA.com for some visuals.

Glock 34
Very accurate gun out of the box.
9mm will punch through paper fine and stop 2 legged critters with proper shot placement.
Since it will double as a home defense gun, the gen 3 Glock frame will accept a variety of weapon mounted lights if want.
Accessories and Magazines are cheaper compared to a 40.00 mag from Sig for my P220 (those meanies). Easy to maintain and very reliable. And also considered a double action weapon just in case you ever have to use it in a lethal force situation.0 -

9mm Browning Hi-Power with adjustable sights. It is a single action, steel frame, and durable classic. It can also be had in 40 S&W. 0 -
Sig .40 or .357 Sig. .40 is more affordable to shoot. .357 is more powerful.
If you can find a 229 in either caliber for $600 or less you will not be disappointed.0 -

Don't discount the Daewoo DH40 in 40 S&W. It is a much overlooked machine. It is the only autoloader that I will trust my wife's life to.
You can have it double action on the first shot, and single action after that. OR --- you can cock the hammer and then push it forward with your thumb. The instant that you touch the trigger -- the hammer will return to the cocked position and fire with a single action trigger pull.

I prefer the 1911's but .45 ammo is not cheap. I cast my vote with the person that recomended the browning high power. i think it fits the criterea you listed best. 0 -
