.17 cal HMR or M2

.22 L.R
With all the rage over these two recently developed rimfire cartridges, I have a couple of questions that I hope someone could answer. I was wondering why the manufacturers of this rimfire ammunition don't take that same bullet design concept and put it in a .22L.R. round. In other words why not take this ballistic tip style round and put it in a conventional rimfire case to fit your standard rimfire firearm. If there is a reason why this wouldn't work please point out the reason to me. I'am just guessing but I would imagine because of the design of this type of bullet the weight would be around 30gr give or take versus the standard 40gr. The other question I have about this idea concerns the construction of the bullet itself. Correct me if I'am wrong but are the current little .17 rimfire bullets being made a jacketed style versus a copper washed. And if this is so would it pose a problem for premature barrel wear in a conventional .22 rimfire barrel. Does anyone know for sure if the barrels that are being made for the current .17 cal firearms made from a different grade of steel thus able to last longer. I was thinking about this idea for a little while now and wondering how much of an accuracy improvement could be made going this route. It seems the .17 cal has great inherit accuracy while at the same time being an excellent hunting round. This is the main reason I feel this idea could have merit. Another plus is that a person could use this same ammuntion in all the rimfire firearms they currently own. I would appreciate any comments pro or con concerning my idea.

    The ballistic tip style bullet needs one thing, Speed- you will not get enough out of a 22 lr or 22 mag to take full advantage of that bullet types potential.

    Also, the .17 has another advantages Fast, Flat, and for pelt hunters
    little damage.

    I believe that the cartridge OAL would also be a factor.

    To maintain the same length as the 22lr or 22mag you would need a shorter case or the bullet would have to be seated further down into the present length case. And in either case that would reduce the case capacity.

    So if you couple reduced case capacity with a heavier bullet, even with the new "wonder powders" there would probably only be limited improvement.

    Remember the 17HMR and 17M2 both use significantly lighter bullets than their parent cartridges.

    Anyway ... that's my "brain cramp" on the subject.
