Colt 1877 Thunderer question
I'm having a great time shooting it but I have noticed that if I don't give the trigger a crisp (snap)pull all the way back it will not allow the hammer to come all the way back to fire. I can fire it single action all day long and it locks up true and solid. Any idea whats wrong or is this common. any help would be great.

It's not uncommon. Unfortunately, the double action mechanism on the early Colt double action revolvers was not a great design, nor overly robust.....and once it "goes away", it's gone for good. There are no spare parts available.....anywhere, at any price.
Sounds like your double action mechanism is getting worn, and getting ready to go to that "Great Colt Parts Bin In The Sky".
It is possible that it's just dirty or dry, or a bit loose and could be tightened, but I wouldn't try to even open it up on a bet!
If you could find a "Colt Antique Revolver Expert" gunsmith, he'd be able to clean & lube, and possibly, even adjust your DA mechanism, but it would probably be a bit expen$ive.
However, you're not hurting anything by shooting it single action.....just remember the DA on your Thunderer is weak, and it isn't going to get any stronger.

My guess is the trigger strut,item 25, is bent or worn, allowing the trigger to run out of travel before the crosspiece at the upper end of the strut is forced out of engagement with the notch in the internal slot of the hammer.
The double action on these guns is a separate system and doesnt use the single action notches. It's a durable system which I believe accounts for a lot of these guns being found in worn out condition but with the DA functioning.
I believe these revolvers are mostly found to malfunction in the single action mode, which is very gagety and a lot harder to fix.0 -
Thanks guy's only bad thing is that the $5.99 part is not to be had. Appreciate all the help and I'll just keep shooting it and enjoying it.

Yeah it is. Call Frank Higginson of American Antique Arms at 775-265-7009. Figure out which part is the the problem and give him a call.
