need some input/ideas/suggestions for a pistol. used for hunting (mostly wounded animals; head shot), personal protection, and just to have. ANY ideas are appreciated. thanks

A revolver in 38 special or 357 magnum would be ideal for both. I use a Ruger GP-100 in 357mag for both hunting and home defense.

A cheaper 1911 pistol would work or I like the idea of a Ruger GP-100. Very reliable and rugged.

Hunting= 357 mag, I also like the Rugers, but in stainless. Also very good home defence weapon when loaded with Hydro-shocks. Dont forget the S&W model 27 with a 4in barrel. When loaded with Rem 125gr JHP's makes a VERY nice hunting gun.

A great personal defense pistol, great carry, and sufficient for most head or close up kill shots on downed game is the Kimber Pro CDP II (the CDP is for custom defense package)(.45 ACP). Captain...howdy...with all due respect, I doubt one would need a handgun to dispatch a wounded squirrel or rabbit. I have to assume that he is talking deer here.
I carry one of my trusty 1911's..230 grains JHP..big enough to do the job on anything that needs a coup de grace! Human or otherwise!

I'd recommend a S&W Model 586 (blued) or 686 (stainless) .357 Magnum with a 4 inch barrel. It's a good all around handgun. Price is about $300-325 used, around $450-$500 new. 0 -

A Taurus Millenium Pro PT-145 w/Tritium Night Sights. Not really a hunting weapon but, being a .45 acp has plenty of euthanizing properties for turning out the lights of wounded critters. It's a great home defense and concealed carry weapon and with the Tritium Night Sights...you don't have to see'um, you only have to hear them. [:D][}:)][;)] 0 -

Before buying a handgun to carry in the field you need to check your state hunting laws. Here in North Carolina any handgun carried for big game use must have a barrel at least 5.5" long, a bullet diameter of at least .357", and be at least as powerful as .357 magnum. This would disqualify the 9mm and.38 special, also most 1911 .45s unless you have a longslide model.For small game you can carry a .22,but the barrel must be at least 6". 0 -

Here, we have to have specific caliber and cartridge length. Check
the Game rule book. The .357 is the minimum cartridge legal.
.40S&W,.44special,9mm,.38 special won't pass the cartridge length minimum. The exception is the 10mm0 -
Got to love my S&W 610 (10mm revolver) 6.25 inch barrel series 2 they were tapped for scope mount rail. You can chamber .40S&W for the dispatching. 0 -
Get an old Smith and Wesson used police gun in .38 special.
It is a beautiful gun, great for finishing off a deer, [I know, I have used one for killing a deer injured by a car].
It is the most reliable pistol you can buy, ammo is cheap, and is great for self defense.0 -
I agree with Allen, a use police revolver, .38 or .357 cal S&W, Colt, or Ruger. Inexpensive, reliable, and it will do the job you are describing. For small game, I would suggest a similar weapon in .22.

If main purpose is to finish off a deer or larger animal on the ground at close range, I would think a .22 LR or .22 mag would work just fine. I have used my old Ruger Mark I on many hogs and a few deer. One head shot or neck shot finished them all immediately. No blood flying all around and a minimum of a mess and noise. The Ruger revolver model that has a cylinder for .22 mag and .22 LR might be perfect. A trapper would certainly need no more. I realize this type of set-up wouldn't work for hunting large animals and it would be marginal for home defense. I think he actually needs two handguns and if he uses the high end of his budget range he can get two handguns.
Now if he finishing off Kodiak/brown bears or musk ox, I may have to rethink this suggestion.

Check the regs. for your state and go with the stipulated minimum caliber, or better.
