7.62x51mm US manufacture
Is there a source or who manufactures ammo in 7.62x51mm for the military in the US. I'm looking for a source of new military ammo. I know the 5.56 can be found made by federal part no. XM193.

Hi,
Not sure I completely understand your question, but many people try to obtain the Lake City (LC headstamp) military brass for their 7.62x51. It is supposed to be the most robust of the military types.
Various manufacturers make brass for the military like Winchester, but no commericial manufacturer makes brass to the standards of the military for the civilian market that I am aware of because of the SAAMI standards. The military brass is extra strong because of the chamber pressure developed by the 7.62x51. The .308 does not develop as high a pressure because of dimensional differences betweeen the cartridges. Usually, Winchester is the most robust brand of brass on the market.
A website like
www.gibrass.com
They have brass of various military manufacture as well as once-fired military match brass. Shotgun News also has many vendor who sell once-fired military brass.
Hope this helped.

Lake City is the only GOCO (Govt owned-Contractor Operated) ammo plant still in operation, they mfg most of the small arms ammo for the US Military. I believe that Federal is the current company running the plant. Some of this ammo, will on occasion, come on the market. 0 -
Thanks all, very good info.
Is there any truth to "military ammo has hard primers and commercial has soft primers".0
