Winchester Model 12 12 g pre 64 Help

i just picked up a mint model 12 in 12gauge its over 95 percent wood is perfect its really unbelievable belonged to an older gentlemen and spent the last 70 yrs at the back of his closet covered in oil and well wrapped cleaned it up and its like new. its ser number is 1856xx has a full choke and bore is mint wood is mint finish is perfect barrel has the last 3 of the ser number on it any ideas when it was made and what it may be worth? im not a shotgun guy i bought several other winchester with it and the price was right so i couldnt pass it up thanks jim

    Looks like c.1918.

    Assuming no special order features, it should bring around $500 and possibly more to a collector wishing to upgrade.

    Good morning jhwoody4! welcome to the forum. I'm afraid I'll have to disagree a little with Country, my Riffle book says 1919. S/Ns for that year 183462-219457. To find an 85 year old Winchester in that condition is rare. After all they certainly weren't "collectables" back in 1919, I would want to look at it very close to ensure it wasn't reblued. When the safety is in the off position, the red warning paint should be almost "blood red" by now. Remove the barrel assy. from the receiver, the round ring, (called the barrel chamber ring) just infront of the breech bolt, should be "in the white" meaning not blued, gunsmiths don't remove this when they reblue. What bothers me is, are you saying the barrel assy, is missing the 185 of the serial number? And only 6xx is there? If this is true, I would say it was polished real hard prior to reblue, because it would have never left the factory that way.
    If the gun is truely all original, these old Nickel Steel guns are getting hard to find in this condition. They usually bring a 10-25% premium over ones stamped "Winchester Proof Steel". If the gun is original, I'd say $500. minimum and wouldn't be surprised to see it go up towards $700. at auction here at GB. If it's been reblued, and the stocks redone, about $250-$375. Regards Dave
