Parallax...can someone explain this to me
I have a Marlin bolt action 22 mag with a 3-9x40 scope mounted. It is not a rimfore scope. I was told that I would not get good accuracy with this scope as the parallax is wrong for a rimfire rifle???
I have the scope zeroed at 100 yards and I use this rifle for close up prairie dog and skunk control. It seems to work just fine, what would a rimfire scope do that this scope doesn't do??

I can give you a practical but not scientific explanation. A scope is parallax free at only one range. To observe what I mean, put your scope in a firm rest and aimed a some point such as a target or small object 100 yds away. Move your eye from side to side or up and down while aiming through the scope. If the scope is parallax free the crosshair will appear to stay on the target while your eye is moved. Then aim at some object at a 35 yards or so. Move your eye as described above and if the crosshair appears to move from the point aimed at, you are experiencing parallax. A scope can be adjusted to be parallax free at any distance but it is to be done at the factory, not by the user. For most hunting situations the slight error caused by parallax is not significent. In bench rest or very accurate target shooting, it can be noticed. You can avoid the parallax problem by placing your eye in exactly the same position behind the scope for each shot. This would be difficult to do and is not a practical solution to the problem. 0 -
Most rimfire scopes are adjusted to be parallax free at about 50 yards. Rifle scopes 100-200 yards or more. When looking at an object through the scope, if you move your eye slightly off center and the crosshairs or reticle seems to move across the target that is parallax. If the reticle stays on target while eye is slightly off center scope is parallax free at that range. 0 -
Herschel..you are partly correct about parallax settings on scopes being set at the factory. This is true on those scopes that don't have a parallax correction ring on the front ocular. My Weaver V-9 is shooter correctable from 50'- 1000yds.
Most 22 scopes are set for 50 yds.

I have found that if I have a scope that is giving me parallax, I "ride" the parallax high (or hold my eye high relative to the eyepiece) and achieve respectable results. For benchrest and target shooting I too, prefer an A.O. scope. Of course, if you're not having any difficulty hitting your targets, all of these responses are somewhat moot.
