LAPD Commemorative 1911's
I am seeking values on a set of LAPD 200th year anniversary commemorative 1911's . These pistols are consecutive serial numbers, have individual cherry wood/blue felt presentation cases, an engraved LAPD badge on the frame, and 'City of Los Angeles 200TH Anniversary, 1781-1981' on the slide. They were offered to LAPD officers in 1981. Any information on estimated value on these peices is appreciated.

From your description they sound like a nice set. I dont see any ref to them in my Blue book. If they are in excellent condition I would estimate about $2,000.00 for the set.

personally i think since you have sequential serial numbers ,a collector that would be looking for them could possibly pay twice the price you where quoted above ,so i would go with that as a low end of the spectrum

These guns won't be listed anywhere because they are "special editions", not "commemoratives". That is, they were ordered by a distributor on a custom basis, not cataloged & available from all distributors.
As a rule, collectors have no interest in "special editions". You may find some LE folks who missed out on the original offering, but there's no solid data on resale. Lefty's estimate is probably good, but finding a buyer for a "special edition" is a problem at any time.

...Depending on the condition and if ALL the original paper work,box etc. is still with the set. Lefty is probably well in the ball park with the value because nmyers is 100% correct about the special editions...I'm assuming they are Colt Series 80's?
...The "bigger bucks" (still in the low/mid 2's for the pair) will be paid by someone with sentimental type ties to LAPD for some reason or another.

If indeed these are still around, I still agree with lefty, and nmyers in the 1000.00 each range, solely because they are Colt's, and are Series 70's most likely. If they didn't have all that LAPD garbage stamped on them, they would be substantially worth more. 0
