Ishapore Enfield Magazine Lanyard Ring?

I have an Ishapore Enfield 2A1 .308 bolt action rifle. It's so ugly that it's beutiful. Anyway, the 12 round box magazine has a little steel loop/lanyard kind of thing on the bottom and I have no idea what it's for. Does anyone know?
