How to disassemble/ clean 742?

Does anyone know of a web site that covers how to take down and properly clean a Remington 742 rifle? Mine is in excellent condition and I'd like to try to prolong its life as much as possible. Thanks!

    Do not know of a site such as you mention. However, simply remove the forearm from the rifle and clean the recoil spring, action tube and action bars as well as the surface of the barrel. Next, drift out the two trigger plate pins and remove the trigger mechanism by pulling down on the rear of the trigger guard and pushing slightly foward at the same time. As the rear of the mechanism clears the receiver then remove by pulling downward and backward at the same time. Make sure the safety is on while removing or replacing this unit. This is as far as you should go with disassembly. Clean using Hoppe's #9, a tooth brush and blow out well with an air compresser. I would not recommend further disassembly. When replacing the trigger mechanism it may help you to hold the action open. Apply the least amount of lubricant possible, I like Break Free applied with a toothbrush.

    While the trigger mechanism is removed, look inside the receiver, on the side opposite the ejection port, on both the top and side rails, to see if there are any "saw teeth" like marks (usually 5). If these marks are evident by either sight or feel then your rifle is on its way to being a major PITB. These are not simple or easy firearms to disassemble completely.

    to PROPERLY clean a 742 you have to remove the barrel (large nut under the forend), best is to take it to your local gunsmith and pay him the $25/50 he should charge. like r.j.s. stated, if it has 'teeth' cut in the receiver start looking for a good rifle. I just condemned a 742 last nite, 'teeth' were cut so deep and sharp you could saw wood with them.
