44 MAG HUNTING AMMO. HELP PLEASE

I recently purchased a "Henry Big Boy" in 44 mag and would like the opinion of the experts here on the best hunting ammo for whitetail deer. If possible, would like suggestions on 44 mag round and the 44 special. Shooting range would be between 50 and 75 yards. The gun has a 20" barrel with a 1:38 inch twist.

Please provide brand name and bullet type and weight that will afford me the best results. Thanks in advance for your responses.[^][^][^]

    Hi notdownorout,

    There are several good chocies up for selection.

    First at 75 to 100 yard range, the .44 Mag may be preferable to the .44 Special. The ballistics of the Magnum would provide an edge and more power if a big buck is encountered at the limit of effective range.

    As far as bullets are concerned, the Speer Gold Dot Hollow Point 240 grain bullet would be a good choice for deer.

    Thanks for your response. I was definitely planning on using the 44 mag ammo versus the 44 special. The article in the current issue of Guns and Ammo stated that the best accuracy results were obtained with the 44 mag ammo. What I was looking for in feedback is ammo I can buy off the shelf. Handloading for me is not an option, due to physical handicap issues. If you have any suggestions your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

    Go to www.midwayusa.com. Look under handgun ammunition. What heavyiron is trying to tell you is that Speer has it's own line of ammo now. I have no experience with the rifle in .44 mag, but do like the Winchester Silver tips and also the PMC offerings. Also look at Black Hills. You're still going to have to group a few different ammo types to see what works best in your rifle. They usually aren't as picky as revolvers, but as everyone here will probably tell you, each gun has its own preference of one ammo over another.

    240 gr HP or maybe even the 300 grHP in Hornady , Speer , Winchester silvetip , Cor-bon makes super ammo but its a little on the high side ,
    just stay away from the cow-boy loadings and you will do fine .

    Thanks to all of you for your input. I already had placed 2 types of ammo in my shopping cart on Midway. I was waiting for this feedback before I placed an order. Just so happens that both items I selected were mentioned in your feedback.

    Hello "notdownorout"[:)]

    In addition to quail, dove, snipe and assorted other small game, I also hunt coastal marsh hogs in the "Big Bend" area of Florida. I normally use a rifled barreled pump shotgun with "Terminator" slugs from www.dixieslugs.com. However, I also carry a S&W model 29 as backup as it may get up-close and personal when you are "ground-blinded" in.

    I have had good results with Hornady Custom Ammunition - 240 grain, jacketed-hollow-point, XTP head.

    Additionally, I have had good results with PMC - 240 grain - "Starfire" hollow points.
