AK47 or AMD 65 assembly
Just a quick question that I'm sure a bunch of you know the answer to. I've been taking a look at several 'parts' kits over the past several weeks. Buying the kits and an AK reciever here on GB would put an AK or an AMD 65 in my hands concievably at under $200. That's pretty hard to beat. Since the reciever is the registered 'firearm' would it be completely legal to just assemble one of these kits and assemble it? How difficult would it be to put something like this together? And finally, since the AMD65 kits have short barrels and folding stocks, would this be legal to assemble with an AK reciever? It seems that if it were this easy, no one would buy a completed AK with a markup of 80-200+ bucks.

Here you go for resources specificaly for ak's, www.akfiles.com, www.ak47.net, www.gunco.net. On the amd I believe you need to add a barrel extension to make it legal or register it as a short barrel rifle if legaly allowed in your area. Your cost is due to tools you may need for the barrel trunion/ rivit build, and the american parts (remember no more than 10 imported parts total on a build to comply)you need to include in your build. There are some people that use screws rather than Rivets, You will find a lot on those web sites, I've been looking myself. it is an interesting experance. remember if the reciever is over 80% compleate you will have to deal with it being shipped to a ffl dealer, (added cost). If you start bending your own recievers you need to make or buy a jig for bending. 0 -
just a warning, lots of those parts kits are technically full auto replacement kits. They wont function fully automatic but if you get caught with it in your AK.... I'm afraid you're screwed.

The only thing that separates a semi and full auto ak is the trigger group from what I've found. I've seen no difference in the bolt/carrier.
You'll want to use a US trigger group and be A-ok for your build anyways.
I got my AMD65 kit from TAPCO and they provide US compliant parts for your build. If you bend your own receiver you'll have to heat treat it also. If you buy a OOW receiver make sure you trim it down because alot of people are building AK's on them only to find out the receiver is too dang long and the receiver top cover won't even fit on.
When building the AMD you must weld on the barrel extension AND weld the muzzlebreak on to get 16".
My AK build had on the front trunion- 2 lower rearward holes were screwed (6mm). The top forward holes were MIG welded. Welding it up is stronger than the rivets and if you need to replace the barrel- just press it out of the trunion.
The reason not everyone builds their own AK's is they like to hear things like SAR....a name with high value in case they ever wanted to sell their AK. You can't sell an AK you make yourself as you possess no firearms manufacturing license.0 -
If you use a OOW reciever you are not manufacturing anything. You are simply assembling it. A big difference. Although nowhere I have been able to locate states that you cannot sell a home built firearm, I simply would not make a practice of it. My OOW Recievers required no trimming, only drilling of 10 holes, and cutting out the area for the side folder. In reality you will be closer to $300 before you get done by the time you buy magzines and US compliance parts.

thanks for the input guys, i guess it was a bit more extensive than i had originally thought. ah well, i guess this may be a project i have to wait on.
