3" vs 3 1/2" Shotshells
I have been looking at a lot of shotguns lately and have been wondering if 3 1/2" is better than the 3" or if I will really see any difference. I hunt from grouse to geese and am looking for the best all around size load. Most of the time I am shooting 2 3/4 for most small game animals. What would you recommend.

Yes, you will see/feel a difference. 31/2" is great for goose, don't know anyone that doesn't use them if they can. There is no all-around shotgun load. If so, it would be the 31/2", but there wouldn't be much left of your grouse.[:p]

One things for sure.
Your shoulder is definitely going to tell the difference.
When I got my Mossberg 835 for turkeys,I looked for 3.5's and no one in town had them.I settled for a box of 3" magnums.OUCH!!!And that was just three shots.

This thread has been done several times in the last few weeks. Do a search and take a look at what has been said. I shoot a Benell super black eagle and really like it. Good Luck.

I used 3 1/2" shells in my Benelli Super Black Eagle last month and didn't find the recoil bad. I used #1 steel shot and was able to drop a goose with two shots at roughly 40-45 yards. But our guide (who also has a Benelli) said you can do fine with 3" magnum loads. 0 -
I kinda like the 3.5" shells in my 10ga . . . . Never had a 3.5" 12ga, but I never noticed recoil with 3" mags. It was there, but not punishing. I've always used semi-autos for waterfowling and that may be the reason why.
You can always shoot shorter shells in a longer chamber. If you get the 3.5" chamber, you will have the capability whether you use it or not. Better to have and not need that the converse, I would think.
