    Centerfire or rimfire, I'm going to use it the just as a practice gun.

    Go to the local range that shoots the game you are interested in while a match is going on and see what the shooters are using. Ask questions when the match is over! In my experience the shooters will be more than willing to help you get started.

    As the others have said and each person has a different preference that even changes when you get more into it. For .22, the Ruger MarkII auto and the Ruger Single Six are both very reliable, tough, relatively inexpensive and quite accurate. The Browning Buck Marks and the Smith 617 are also very good, tho the Smith will set you back
    as much as a big bore.

    practice is what ones does in preparation for doing something bigger. what are you going to practice 'for?' and then, ask yourself, am i practicing to win or practicing to just shoot a gun? my answer will be determined by your response. i hope i can help. [:)]

    I like the Ruger Mark II, 22/45 "Great Eight". Fine target pistol to plink with, great shooter right out of the box. I also have the Ruger Single Action six shooter, .22. Fun to shoot and plink with, but not a target pistol...

    I'll go with Oklahoma's suggestion. Good pieces at reasonable prices.
    The 22 is a basic staple for all gun cabinets.

    I have both and are happy with them. My Ruger 22/45 is an 8" slab side bbl, but not marked 'great eight'. It has the lightest factory trigger I've ever used. I have not discovered it's 'pet ammo', but the CCI mini-mags are the worst in this piece.

    Re: The Single Six.... a good piece also. One I have is 22/22mag, and the 22 mag does not impress me, but you have it if you want it.

    Both these Rugers are good holding representives of higher power handguns. I have heard some below average scuttle about Rugers centerfire handguns, but I don't have personal experience with them. BUT the 22/45 is a good piece that doesn't cost a bundle, and the revolver line has always been very solid.

    If you should ever need Ruger's Customer Service, they have a good track record from what I've heard...I have never had to send any one of their products back for service.

    I like my High Standard 102 Supermatic Citation (the old ones) lots of barrels to choose from. Like having all kinds of clubs for golf except the long walks.
