winchester model 12

Looking for a model 12 in 20ga. or 12ga. made in 1953. What ser. # range would I be looking for?

    Can a winchester model 12 12 gauge 2 3/4" chamber be modified ( have chamber lenghtened) to shoot 3" shells
    The reason i ask is i own a model 12 roit gun (watts commemorative edition[:D]) which is in like new condition. I would like to purchase a extra barrel/ mag,forearm which i see a lot of on ebay. I would like to have a spare duck gun realize the new set up will have to be fitted .What i really wanted was a 12 heavy duck

    Hello Jamie...

    You did not mention what gauge you Model 12 is, and that will make a difference in the potential value. The "kick" pad (most commonly referred to as a "recoil" pad) is most likely not original... Winchester installed a black hard rubber butt plate during the time when your gun was made. Unless your gun is marked "TRAP", "SKEET", or "PIGEON", it is a standard Field grade gun, and is most likely worth $400 or less.

    Hello Jmeb: Since your gun was made in early 1923, it's definately not a "Skeet" grade gun, since they didn't come out until 1934, (Ref. Riffle) During this time frame the recoil pads used by Winchester, were the Solid Red pad marked Winchester with a 1922 patent date, along with Hawkins vented pad, Jostom pads, D-W No-A, and Goodrich Air cushion pad. A gun that's 80 plus years old, is hard to find with the original pad, since they get hard, take a set, and fall apart with age. So unless your gun has one of the above, it most likely isn't original. Now with a "plain barrel" it is most likely not a "Black diamond" grade either. Black diamonds would be on each side of the wrist area of the butt stock just behind the Receiver, and they are checkered.
    The fact that the gun is "really tight" is interesting. But when you remove the barrel assy from the receiver, the adjusting sleeve around the barrel , has notches on it. When holding the barrel assy. look at about the 5 o'clock postion, you will see the adjusting sleeve lock. Look closely and see what notch it is on. If it hasn't been used much and or abused, it should be on the first or second notch. This design feature allows one to "tighten" the barrel assy. as wear takes place.
    Since the barrel assy. is off look at the face of the breech bolt. There is a round ring, just in front of it, this is the barrel chamber ring. It should be "in the white" no blue color, just like the breech bolt. If it's gun blue in color, this means the gun was reblued at one time.

    So with all that being said, if the gun is original, bluing, recoil pad, a Nickle Steel gun with a Modified choke, (not many around or left) could have a price range $350-$650, depending on the exact condition, LOP of the stock, more than usual figure in the grain of the stock. Let us know exactly what you have. Side note: "Factory Recoil pads" were about a $5.00 option when your gun was made, so there is a possibilty if your pad is original, this was "Special ordered" Regards Dave
