Ruger Bearcat ammo choices
Yesterday, I bought a new Bearcat, the stainless model. Beautiful gun! The owners manual says it can shoot 22short, long, and cb caps, as well as long rifle. Is there any danger of fouling with the shorter rounds? It's raining today so I won't get to try this beauty out for awhile. Any recommendations for good plinking ammo? Thanks.

I've tried "everything" in mine, except the shot (which reminds me; I need to try those). I wouldn't describe it as "danger" in fouling with the shorter rounds, but yes, you can get a little fouling and resistance loading LR rounds after shooting a number of short rounds. I've experienced nothing that I would consider as a problem, but am only shooting a couple of hundred rounds (mixed LRs and shorts) before cleaning; you might have problems if you shot a greater number of shorts then tried LRs.
I'd also remind you that it is stainless steel -- so get out there and shoot it even if it's raining! You'll love it! Make sure you bring enough ammo!
I've always prefered CCI, expecially their Stingers, but other brands should work just fine. Buy a brick of CCI, Federal, Remington, etc and go have some fun!

Thanks. It's not so much the rain, I shoot at a farm my wife's uncle owns. It's a 5 minute walk to where he lets us shoot, and it will be knee deep mud on a day like this. I've got a brick and a half of Win. Wildcat that I plan to shoot in the gun. I'm all out of Remington right now. But I'm sure I'll stock up again soon.

I always shoot long rifle in mine. I find that the standard velocity rounds usually give better accuracy in handguns.If you want something cheap try CCI Blazers.You can get a case (10 bricks) from Sportsman's Guide for about 100.00 including shipping. 0 -
it says 22 lr on the side of my Bearcat... is that all that is recomended? 0 -
You can shoot any .22 round in a Bearcat, with the exception of .22 MAG which can only be fired in a convertible Bearcat when assembled with the .22 MAG cylinder.
Despite careful cleaning, you will eventually get a ring in the cylinder holes. JB Bore Paste will readily remove the ring.

Any .22LR revolver including your Bearcat should safely handle all the variants of .22s (long rifle, long, short, CB and BB caps, shot, blanks), though obviously some of these will work better than others.
The real issue here is that if you fire lots of rounds with short cartridge length, you can get fouling in front of the case, and that can make it hard to then insert normal .22LRs into the chamber.
If that happens, the "cure" is to carefully scrub out the chambers with a brass brush and some good solvent.

LOL. . .I was pretty excited there until I saw the year of that post! Those late Bush years really were a historical anomaly in terms of just how cheap ammo was.
Sadly, in 2012, Sportsman' guide doesn't seem to offer CCI Blazers any more. As comparison, a case (10 bricks, or 5000 rounds) of the Remington Thunderbolt .22LR now costs $200 (on backorder), for roughly double the cost in only 8 years time.0 -
If you want a low power round for the .22 RF that won't leave a ring in the chamber try the CCI .22 CB long. It uses the long rifle size case, but drives a short bullet with only a priming charge. It will roll a cotton tail at 20 yards, but leaves the chambers clean as the case mouth is the same as the LR. 0 -
When I was a kid, .22 Shorts and Longs made sense because they cost less. I don't think any .22 is cheaper than low end .22 LR these days. And with the profusion of types, standard velocity, subsonic, high velocity, and extra high velocity, there is not much call for the other types. Maybe 62fuelie's CB Longs for special purposes. 0 -

Well, the .22 long rounds are pretty darn quiet out of a rifle, quieter even than the so-called "subsonic" rounds. So these could have certain "pest control" applications.
(IMO, "subsonic" rounds are gimmicky. . .all target ammo is actually subsonic, and the soft lead bullets mushroom, making them reasonable for certain hunting applications).
Meanwhile the primer only "colibri" and other rounds are literally completely silent from a rifle. Firing these sounds just like a dry fire. While accuracy is generally lousy and range poor, these are quiet enough to shoot indoors without ear protection if you wanted to.0 -

I call BS on this! I have shot a bunch of Jacks and CT's over the years. Their not particularly easy to kill even with High Speed HP's. Unless your a phenom with a handgun who can nail them through the brain at 20 yards, there going to take off on you, if it's not a good shot. And that's with the High Speed HP's.0 -
I can tell you it takes real skill to only wound a jack rabbit with a 30-06. I like CCI CB Long in a rifle. 0
