Advice on good buys in O/U

I've been taking a friend to my club for trap and skeet shooting. He's gotten to really like it and is now thinking about getting an O/U in 12 guage. Since he's not yet a 100% sure how much time he'll have for shooting, he's thinking of getting a "starter" gun with a price range of about +/- $1000. What makes and models would you suggest he look at?

    I don't care for O/U's I'm more SxS guy. But in that price range you could get a Ruger Red Label.I would also look at the EAA/Baikal O/U's.

    I don't approve of political jokes. I've seen too many of them get elected.

    You can get a Khan for less than $400, and they're 10X the gun a Stoeger Condor is.

    skeet and trap are to different games requiring 2 different guns. get a remington 3200 for each, or, get a winchester 101 for each. or get an o&u for skeet and stick to a single bbl for trap...like a BT99. remember, monte carlo stock for trap and field style for skeet. you cant play both with one gun effectivley due to this. for the money truly the browning citori high rib is still the best buy in town. look at one closely.

    How do you figure that? I shoot both with a trap configuration, and it's the only way I can do it. My field stock is just too low for skeet.

    Thanks, guys, for the suggestions. Bobski: I'm aware of the different type guns needed for trap and skeet, and so is my friend, since he's shot both a couple of times with me. I think, since he's just starting out in the shooting sports, that he's not going to want to buy a specialty tool like a trap gun as his first gun. So I think he'll probably go for a sporting clays or field gun so he can use it for skeet and perhaps some bird hunting, but still have a non-competitor's fun on the trap range with IM/F chokes in.

    ok, then do it this way. get the citori with the adjustable comb stock. this way he can adjust for each game. trap guns need to be elevated so you dont lose sight of the bird as it rises. on skeet, you need the bird closer to the front bead and in the line of flight. yes...some like to float a bird with a m/c stock, but for a beginner, he needs to learn basics first. if you start out floating birds. its easy to miss if the wind picks up and you dont know where to aim to compensate. ive shot for yeeeears before i went to m/c on skeet. and the only reason i did, was to lock my cheekbone into the wood like glue and in doing so, i was able to keep the same sight picture. remember, where the check touches the wood, is where the game is won or lost.

    Great topic Jazzman. I'm in the same boat but I'm the one who was taken by a friend to shoot sporting clays. I used his old Stoeger O/U. SC is hard, but I did pretty good for the first time. I wanna try skeet and trap and am looking for an O/U, lower price range though, on a budget right now. I'll check out the Khan, thanks Eastwood.

    Interesting comments, Bobski. But, what do you mean by "start out floating birds"? Also, I'm thinking about having one of those adjustable monte carlo cheekpieces installed on the shotgun I use for skeet and trap. I'm kind of concerned, though. Does that mean I'll have to adjust it as I move from the skeet to the trap range, and vice versa? If so, I'm thinking that I may be better off just using one gun for trap and another (Winchester 101 20 gage skeet&skeet) for skeet. What do you think?
