What is the model and year of manufacture of a S + W .38 sp. based on the following:
It has 5 screws, nickel plated,K frame with serial no. #4405xx. It has pearl grips,4 inch barrel. The numbers on the loading gate are different (73889).I can find no model number.

Military & Police Model of 1905. 4th Change
With s/n supplied mfg. date range is 1915-1942 for numbers 241704 to 700000, so I'd estimate yours was made in late-20's to early 30's.
S&W didn't start using Model numbers until 1957 and at that time this revolver became the Model 10.
For these revolvers s/n are found under the barrel in the flat area by the frame and on the bottom of the grip strap as well as on the cylinder. Also original stock grips marked with the s/n of the revolver and so was many of the special order grips ... carefully remove the grips and see if the s/n is penciled on the grips.
Other numbers found on the gun are assembly or bin numbers used during mfg. of the revolver.
Lastly, for $30 you can get a factory letter from S&W that will tell you the mfg. date, where shipped, etc.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
