What are the Benneli M-1 Chokes
My Benneli M-1 has 5 chokes. Oh my chokes have changed from my 34 year-old 870 Wingmaster. I just change the entire barrel to change chokes on that old girl. In any case I have some chokes that I am not sure of on my new Benneli. I know what IC, Mod, & Full are. I'm nost sure of the "IM" and "CL"? Can anyone explain these two chokes?
Also some of my choke tubes say "Steel Shot-OK" others say "No Steel Shot". What happens if I shoot steel through the ones that say "No Steel"?
These two questions I know sound dumb to some of you, but I do not know if I don't ask!

Fitz, welcome to the forums! IM is Improved Modified and CL is Cylinder. A lead shot choke tube in Mod. is FUll for steel shot. Steel will split the end of your barrel at worst, spread the choke or damage the tube at least. It won't compress like lead will. Lead and steel use different shot cups too.

Cyl = Cylinder = No constriction at all.
This is the choke you want to use if you want the shot to spread as much as the gun will allow.
Improved Modified is tighter than Modified, but not as tight as Full offcourse.
Generally you can say that:
Cylinder/Cyl Choke = 0/4th
Improved Cyl Choke = 1/4th
Modified Choke = 2/4th = 1/2
Improved Modified Choke = 3/4th
Full Choke = 4/4th.
The one that constricts the least is 0/4th = no constriction.
Then the smaller the hole gets, the tighter it patterns.
I.E. it ranges from Cylinder to 1/4 to 1/2 to 3/4 to Full.
Sometimes you can even get a choke that will be tighter and pattern more dense than a Full choke.
That is sometimes called Extra-Full or 5/4, or even TurkeyChoke.
The chokes job is to constrict the area of which the shot can pass - make the shot stay together and have more pellets on a smaller area.
If you shoot steelshot through a choke that has a too small hole - i.e. steelshot through a choke that is too tight (like a Full choke.) - the steelpellets can damage the choke.
The choke itself can be either enlargened in diameter while it is still inside the barrel - that will inevitably/ultimately leave you with a choke you cannot remove without damaging everything.
Or the steelshot can lead to such resistance that it will tear out the choke - damaging the treading in the barrel and the choke itself.
Steelshot is much harder than leadshot - and lead can deform when it is choked in a gun. Steel will not deform nearly as much.
That way the steelshot is much harder on the choke.
Don't do anything that I've allready done - That'd be just plain STOOOOOOPID.0
