Autoloading or lever action .44 Rem. Mag.

I have (and LOVE) one of those nifty S&W Performance Center Model 629 "Special edition" handguns. Now, I'd like to add to my using "arsenal" an autoloading or lever action carbine in the same caliber (.44 Rem.Mag.). I've looked at the Ruger "Deerfield" and the Model 96 lever action but they only have a 4-shot capacity. The Marlin 1894SS is the direction I'm leaning because of its 10-round capacity.

What else is out there that I'm missing?

BTW, I'm not looking to go into battle but I hate reloading when the shooting is good. [8D]

Any INFORMED suggestions would be appreciated. [^]

    I think Winchester did a limited production run of 1892's with 20" barrels in .44 mag this year. They're slick little rifles. I don't know if they're still available, but you could check their web site. Also the Rossi/LSI 1892 Puma is available in .44 mag and .454. The people that have them seem to like them.

    Had a deerfield and it was a great gun but like you said 4 rounds [V] Your pistol holds 2 more. I have a marlin 1884 and love it. Looked at the Win mod 94s too, they are also great but I shot a few of each before choosing my marlin, it fits me well. Like with any other fire arm there arm many good quality choices in the style you want. The key is to get the one that feels best to you.

    I have a Deerfield .44mag. Its a nice little powerful package, but functions best with full power loads. Ruger says NOT to use aluminum cased ammo in it as it is loaded to med power.

    A benefit of the levers is they are not finicky about the ammo loadings and there is a pretty good selection of guns to choose from.

    A word of advice, here. The Winchester 94's in 44 mag come with a 1/38 twist. The NEW Rugers, NOT the old ones, have 1/20 which is much better for accuracy. The old Rugers also had 1/38 twist. I think the Marlins have 1/30, and the Rossi's have 1/30. I don't know why they all put such a slow rate of twist on the rifles, when all the handguns have MUCH faster. Ruger did learn their lesson on the old ones, and corrected it on the new ones. I had one of the old Rugers, and I was very dissappointed with the accuracy. I finally sold it. I can't own a rifle that won't shoot!! I hope this helps.

    When reloading ammo for tube fed rifles, you must have a tight crimp to keep the bullet from being pressed down into the casing.

    IMHO it is a waste of time to have a rifle that takes a pistol cartridge. All you end up with is a long barreled pistol. Most rifle ammo, example 30-30, is much more powerful than a .44mag.

    I bought a winchester .44 mag and was unhappy with the range and power. If this is what you want, more power to you.

    Not easy to find but I have a Browning lever action 44 mag which is a great little rifle with I think 7 round tube mag. It is a model 92 centennial model

    Love that little rifle. Fun to shoot and accurate.

    Thanks for ALL the good input. Will consider all the posts, especially the one about the pistol ammo in a long barrel. I've got a pre-64 Model 94 .30-30, so I may just save my money.
