Remington mdl 742
I have a remington model 742 and I am having trouble with the gun extracting the shell while firing it. I just recentaly bought an extractor for this gun an put it in. Only when I fire the gun does it not extract the bullet from the barrel. When I load and unload the gun the extractor works flawlessly. It grabs the bullet and ejects it. What can my problem be. I will appricate any help at all. Thanks Daniel.

Hmm.. a 742 Woodsmaster.. Well, I have good news and bad.. If you want to find out the bad news for yourself take apart the receiver. Look inside te receiver itself.
In other words, you're gun is basically junk now. The problem with the 742, it basically chews itself out. "The extractor is like a mini cutting tool." See, the extractor sits in the action loosly, and over time after it wobles back and forth it cuts grooves into the reciever, and everytime you fire off a shot, the extractor seets itself in the grooves, not allowing it to move forward. Something remington couldn't fix. It happened with the 740s/742s/7400's. There was once a deal going on with Remington, but they discontinued it. So, there's really nothing you can do to save you're gun. Unless you wanna hunt with it, single shot style.
Oh good news? Well, I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico.[:D]

Wait, Muchow, I just re-read what you said, and I believe I answered the wrong question. What it appears to me, is that you're having chamber problems, when the bullet fires, the shell casing doesn't shrink back to normal intime for you're extractor to grab the casing and eject it. I bet you know that when ever a cartridge is fired the casing expands, and gasses escape the chamber allowing the cartridge to shrink back to normal.
I don't know what you're problem is, but i'd say it'd be with you're chamber.

Your chamber probably needs cleaning / polishing...The slightest bloom of rust will cause the fired case to stick...Apitted chamber will have the same effect, but worse since the brass will flow into the pits under chamber pressure..

If the problem is with the cartridge case "sticking" in the chamber, the extractor will usually tear a piece of brass from the cartridge rim.
Try firing the rifle with the magazine in and loaded with only the cartridge you intend to fire. Cycle the cartridge into the chamber and then fire the rifle. Where is the cartridge now; stuck in the chamber or partially extracted but not ejected? Or, is the bolt closed on the fired cartridge?0 -
When I fire the single shell the bolt opens and catches on the magazine, and the shell remains in the chanber with out the extraction process working properly. That seems strange because when I close the bolt after firing the single bullet the extractor works flawlessly, grabbing the shell and ejecting it. Also, when I fill the magazine up with shells the gun cycles as normal. Thanks again Daniel. 0 -
At this point I would try another magazine. Also, remove the forearm and pull the action open letting the magazine keep the action open. Look at the gas tube (it is the 1" long tube protruding from the rectangular housing on the bottom of your barrel) it should look like a tube with no dents or chips around the mouth. Also, while the forearm is off it would be a great idea to clean any powder residue from the action spring and bars. Will not guarantee anything, however, it might work. The beauty of these firearms is that you never really know where the problem lies until you do something that makes the gun work. Keep us informed. 0 -

I have had a couple of these guns with a similiar problem. It is probably a dirty chamber. Also look at what sort of ammo you're using in conjunction ie: not M2 ball surplus. Use only commercial ammo as I've found some sticking problems. Surplus ammo seems to have a lacquer coating that gums up commercial rifles after heating up. Find a flexible cleaning rod that will snake into the chamber with a .38 cleaning brush attached and scrub/ oil your chamber real well. This should clear up your reliability problem.

One more thing....
I'massuming your gun is a 30/06 as 90% of them are. If it's a .308 another problem could be chamber size vs. surplus ammo which is 7.62x51 Nato vs. 308 Winchester. They're not QUITE the same and can cause problems. I have a 788 bolt gun in 308 that gets cases stuck like hell with some South African surplus crap I got at a gun show.
