Colt Python approx. value
Hi to all.
I have a 357 Colt Python purchased in the mid 50's.
It has a two digit serial number 4x with the
number 1 beneath it and the letter K to the right.
It's all original including grips,6 inch barrel,blued.
Don't have the box but the receipt is floating around
here somewhere.
It has one small surface rust spot on the barrel
approximately 1/8 inch.Otherwise the finish is in very
good condition.It has been an occasional shooter.
I'm trying to get an idea of its value,any help would
be appreciated.

I would say the finish is 90-95% after reviewing some of
the completed auction descriptions.

Terms like "very good" are not precise enough. You might think that 80% of the original finish is "very good", & I might think that 90% of original finish is "very good". While an early Python is desirable, condition less than 100% quickly reduces the value to collectors.
Go to the Gunbroker home page & do a "SmartSearch" on completed auctions. See if you can find a Python in similar condition that has sold within the last 90 days. That should be a good guide.

I'm no expert on welding or gun finishes, but I have a suggestion (of course assuming restoration type work isn't considered "wrong" with guns - some coin and antique collectors don't like "certain kinds" of restoration work)
You can probably remove the rust using Metal Glo. This stuff is really great, it is made by United Cutlery and is the type of thing professional artist use to remove oxidation marks from medieval armor you see in museums. I don't know what the blued finish of a 50's Colt Python is made of, but this polish works on chrome, nickel, stainless steel, pewter, aluminum, brass, silver, gold, copper, mangnesium, and other metals. Some people use it to clean non-porous surfaces that aren't metal too, like porcelain, fiberglass, and others.
You can find it at a variety of online shops. Just type Metal Glo into google. Just a suggestion...0 -
