m1a standard maintenance

I'm still in my first year of shooting. I just got an m1a like 3 weeks ago, and I LOVE it. However, I am not sure on cleaning it. It came with 2 manuals, one from the US army for the m14, and one from Spingfield. The one from the factory specifically says not to lubricate the rifle. But the manual from the army says to apply a light coating of grease with your finger.
Which is true? And if so, where should I apply?
Also, how often do I need to clean the gas system? Every time I shoot it? and how often should I use bore cleaner on the gun? I want it to last.

    The lubrication of M14-clones was covered pretty well a few months ago, & I think Mark Christian did a good job of answering your question. Just do a search on the word "grease".

    There are wide differences in philosophy on how often to clean this, or any other, gun. I only shoot my M1A occasionally, so I clean it completely every time I shoot it. But, if you shoot it often, & moisture/salt are not a problem, you can probably clean it every few thousand rounds.

    I always use a bore guide, although I'm not really sure that it's needed when you have a flash suppressor.

    crud effects accuaracy. every day you shoot it, it gets dirtier than the day before, which means the gun doesnt have the same variables. if you clean it every day, when you shoot it, its the same as it was the day before. its like rewinding a cassette. start from the beginning every day of shooting to get the same results. ive known people to change their dope as the gun got dirty. and when they cleaned the gun, they couldnt understand why the gun was so far off zero. duhhhh. clean it every day.
