mini-30
I've got a ruger mini-30 and am getting about a nine inch group at 100 yards with WOLF 122 gr.HP ammo. I know this ammo isn't "match grade". Is this normal? Is there any ammo out there that will shoot better? Can I reload anything better? I heard the bore on the mini-30 is .308 calibre. Would this make a difference?

Most of the SKS we have around will do a bit better than that with that ammo. Even the MAK-90 we have indentified as the only one to use for 'rapid fire' might still be able to do that. I have a mini 14, and it is an adequate weapon...no tack driver, but better than 9" at 100yds.
Have you had one of your bud's use the gun for a while ? How do they do ?
Are these from a rest of some sort (not over the hood) ?
I assume no scope, but does your eyesight allow you to do better than this with other guns ?
If you are on a rest, things should be better than this unless somethings wrong.

Like GSF said, it is not a tack driver, but capable of much better. I had a trigger job completed on mine, and it gets 2-4in groups at 100 yards. It could be dialed in if you did reload, but it is still not going to be a tack driver.

My Mini-30 with a folding Butler Creek stock, a 4x scope, and using a rest shoots the cheap Russian HP ammo very well. I loaded up a box in a USA mag I recently bought and shot all 20 in about 90 seconds. I then changed brands, and fired another quick 20. The USA mag functioned perfectly and the 80 yard group could be covered by my hand. That's plenty good enough for me.

Go buy 20 rounds of good 7.62x39 ammo from Winchester or Remington, clean the rifle, then take it to the range and benchrest it for accuracy. Depending on the outcome of this there may or may not be more work to do.
Bore diameter for the 7.62x39 is nominally .311 inches however .308 bullets can also be used with good results. There are now several manufacturers who make bullets in .311 diameter for this round. Consult several good loading manuals to develop a load for the rifle. All the Wolf and mil surplus ammo will be .311 diameter.
If this doesn't improve the group size I would either sell the rifle or consider visiting a gunsmith for some trigger work and maybe a new barrel and tuning.

Thanks for the help guys. I was shooting my 10/22 with iron sights from the same rest(a old railroad tie in prone position) and got a 4" group. I took the mini down and cleaned the bore and will get some better ammo to see if that helped.

It is unlikely that you will ever get great accuracy with your mini-30. Although the majority of ammo uses a .311 bullet, Ruger uses a .308 bore. In order to avoid excess pressure, the bbl is made with "freebore". The relatively short bullets do not enter the rifling uniformly and effectively are slightly "tipped" throu the bbl.

As I have said many times before,
THE MINI RIFLES 14 OR 30 ARE NOT MEANT TO BE TACK DRIVERS.
These rifles were designed for special police units and border patrol. They were built to be reliable and fast without malfunctions.
However they should hold groups within 4" @ 100yds.
And anyone who has purchased one has not wasted any money and I would be glad to take it off your hands.

i have done some looking around the internet and there is a outfit out of texas i believe that is selling minis that are custom built on thier actions and are getting 1" -1 1/2" groups but these are up in the $1000.00 dollar range if you type in mini-14 custom rifles i think it will get you close these have new blocks amde and the varitations of barrels are many its quite interesting see these 0
