9mm for deer?
I have a hi-point 9mm carbine which i hit consistently at fifty yards in a 3in circle,Iwould like your thoughts on using same for deer at 40 yards or less yes or notta!also on coyottes[?]THANKS,PAUL

Not legal most places. Head shots only don't shoot further than you can keep in a 2" goup. Almost anything would be a better choice. Even a 22lr.

If the SHTF and you are starving and only have the carbine, sure. I'd try my blue streak in those circumstances (through the eye). Otherwise just slip a little closer and club to death (as long as the gun isn't plastic). You could also jump on it's back and break it's neck. Only my $.02. 0 -
You're a terrible person if you even attempt to hunt a deer with a 9MM. Go back to your target shooting and stay the hell away from hunting.

First of all let me state that I'm not a 9mm fan. I don't even think it's the best choice for protection against two legged critters, but, let me play the devil's advocate here. If you were in a survival situation, with nothing else to rely on except a 9mm carbine, it would be doable.
A typical 9mm 115 grain bullet from a 16" carbine length barrel would leave the muzzle somewhere between 1250 to 1500 fps, which would be about like a hot .357 mag handgun round. Don't get me wrong here; a 115 grain XTP would probably explode on contact at those velocities, but people do hunt deer with .357 handguns using the proper bullets. A 147 grain +P might work OK for a head shot at 50 yards or less. Of course, it might not too.
I wouldn't recommend deer hunting with a 9mm, but if it meant not starving, what do you have to loose?0 -

Rory- the man asked a legitimate question. I don't feel a response such as yours is called for especially on this forum.As your years and experience add up, perhaps your input will be more substantial.
Paul...As others have said, not the best choice. I don't even like to see hunters use a .357 for hunting. Even the M-1 Carbine has more velocity than the 357 or 9mm,and its is not legal in many states. In the "last chance" arena, of course a 9mm will kill a deer...but I don't think thats what you're asking.

I have killed a couple with an arrow at 40 yards. I did hit a deer a few years back and broke her back hips had a ruger 9mm and from 5 yards away put 1 in the head still took a min to die. 0 -

Could you bag a deer with a 9mm? Yes.
SHOULD you try to do it? No. . .not unless you're literally desperate.
A 9mm isn't even powerful enough to "stop" a human reliably at point blank range with one shot. So why are you going to try to KILL a deer with one at 40 yards?
Not fair; anything less than a perfect headshot is very likely to wound the deer without killing it outright. Seriously, you'd probably be better off with a decent bow and arrow.
If you HAVE to shoot a deer with a pistol round out of a rifle, a hot .357 magnum is probably the barest minimum, and even that's pushing it. A .44 magnum would be a much better choice. But your range with that is still going to be limited.
Just about any decent rifle round is going to perform better in terms of power, accuracy, AND range, including a super-cheap 7.62x39 SKS/AK-47 round.
On the other hand. . coyotes? A 9mm isn't the best choice but I suppose it would work.0 -
Hah! A 9mm killing a deer!? Unheard of.. The 9mm roundball, doesn't have enough balls to kill a deer, or the penatration power[:D]

Boy were rough here, twas only a question. BTW Matty, 9MM hardball is a very good penetrator, compared to 45 ball, its a much better penetrator. Dont confuse penetration with stopping power.

An honest question deserves an honest answer, If you shoot a deer with a 9mm you will more than likeley have a wounded critter to chase down. I have allways felt better about instant kills while hunting, to allow it to suffer beacause of a misplaced shot in error is in my opinion one thing however to allow the animale to suffer because you did not use enough weapon is wrong. But this is just my 2c on the matter. And the fact that you have asked the question instead of going ahead and doing it show that you are a responceable hunter and are welcome on my land anytime. 0
