What is the best .40 caliber DAO pistol in the $350.00 to $500.00 range?

    This will not answer you question, but I've always tried to find what I liked and then either get it if funds permitted or waited until I had the funds.

    Handguns are a personal choice. The best for you may not be the best for me and vice versa.

    My two .40's are an P7-M10 and USP40. Took a while, but I got them.

    most prople cant shoot any handgun they pick up.there are diferent sizes of grips weights etc.my suggestion is to go to a gunshop with a range and shoot different weapons till you find one that fits you and your shooting style but there are several different makers i own a beretta mod 96 i like it very much and it is very reliable i have fired several thousand rounds through it and its as accurate today as the day i bought it s&w,glock,h&k also make very good fire arms chambered in 40s&w

    If you're going to be carrying it around for self defense, I would recommend the Beretta 9000S, model F. The only thing about this pistol compared to what you want is, it can function as both double and single action. I personally could care less if a handgun functions as both single and double, because if you want SA or DA only, you can alway use it that way.

    If you don't want to cock the hammer for the first shot, you don't have to. If you don't like the heavy trigger pull, it only takes a split second to cock a hammer - even in a defensive situation, you can do it as you draw your pistol. I really don't understand why people want a DAO pistol, other than the argument that poorly designed hammers could get snagged on your clothing... Specially considering they generally have longer and heavier trigger pulls, usually making accuracy more difficult

    The 9000S holds 10 shots and has adjustable sights. You can find them new for under $500 It is very compact and light weight. Same thing when looking at the F model. Just like single and double action with a hammer - if you don't want to use the safety switch, just disengage it and always leave it off. I always want to have the ability there in my gun, even if I decide never to use it.

    Thank you. What I am concerned about is quality, reliability, history, things like that. I think I am partial to the Walther P990 .40 cal.

    Most people I've spoken to speak highly of Beretta. Maybe you could say they have a history of producing reliable quality products [;)]

    Note that I said *most* people. I'm sure there might be a few on this forum who may say otherwise. But then, there are almost always a few people that hate any gun manufacturer - perhaps just because that one in a million gun had a malfunction.

    For that price range I'd say it would be pretty hard to beat a Glock Model 23. Ideal for carry because of the size and if you live in a FREE STATE (NOT CA) there are 15 round magazines available. The Berreta is a good gun also but big for conceal carry compared to the Glock.

    Actually, the Glock 23's dimensions are listed as 6.8 L, 5 H, and 1.1 W

    The Beretta is 6.6 L, 4.8 H, and 1.7 W The Glock is however, slightly lighter weight.

    What about the Glock 27 .40 cal? I like the looks better but everyone seems to talk about the Glock 23.

    A friend of mine named Kirk actually has one of those. I got a chance to handle it (but not fire it). It is VERY VERY small. Amazing they could load 10 rounds into the mag. If compact and light weight is what you care about most, it could prove good for you

    Since it is so light weight, the recoil is probably quite strong. It doesn't have a manual safety either. But again, if those aren't the types of issues that matter to you, it might be a sound choice.

    I don't know if you count the Glock style trigger as DAO, but if so, I'd consider a Steyr M-40 or a Glock in that order. The Steyr is practically a Glock clone, but more ergonomic.

    Para Ordnance 14.40 LDA (light double action) holds 10 rounds, nice fit and finish , so far shoots really well, cost was just over 500
