I was wondering if anyone could tell me something about the colt woodsman 22LR ie.. when they were made,there value, ect...

If a Woodsman serial number is 100,xxx without any prefix or suffix letter is it a FIRST series?
I don't have it here, but it does have a magazine release on the bottom, fixed front sight, movable rear sight, 4 1/2" barrel, and "THE WOODSMAN" on the side.

need more info. what length is the bbl? does it have fixed sights or adjustable? are there any damaged parts or scratches or wear? btw...welcome to the site. and remember...its not weapon until its pointed at someone. until then, its a firearm.[:)]

Your Woodsman was made at the beginning of 1957 and is 3rd series Woodsman. If it is in excellent condition as you state, it may be worth around $600.00 to $700.00. If you still have the original box it came in, then even more.
Since it has been in your family a long time, I would suggest keeping it and handing it down to your kids.

Nickibear1, a note of caution. I understand the Woodsman's are not strong enough to withstand the pressure of today's high velocity 22 cartridges. My father had one and we could never use modern 22 shells in it. 0 -
nickibear and ironlog...... Actually only the early Woodsmans were restricted to standard velocity ammo. In 1932 at serial # 83790 the guns were able to handle "high velocity" ammo.
They can be identified by the pattern on the mainspring housings. The early standard vel guns had a mainspring housing with a checkered pattern, and the later guns had a serrated pattern.
I have 2 of the early "pre woodsmans" made from 1915 to 1927, so I went out a bought 3 bricks of "standard velocity" ammo.

In answer to an earlier question of me, after checking with my father, this Woodsman has an adjustable site and a 4 1/2" sport model barrel. It has an engraved barrel and stock. The grips are ivory with scrimshaw (brown etching). We do not have the original box but have the original receipt and instruction booklet. This gun was purchased by my father in Weisbaden, Germany while stationed in the Air Force there in March of 1957. Any other input would be appreciated and thanks for all your help. 0 -
your gun was customized. thus all quotes go out the door. it was very common for serviceman to have guns customized while stationed there. wonderful engravers could be had for pennies on a dollar. so, even though the collectors value of the gun has been compromised, it still may have value from someone who likes engraved guns. a picture would reaaaalllly be helpful. 0 -
In answer to your question, I'm disappointed that this has compromised the value. It is a beautiful piece. My father has always been a hunter/skeet shooter/gun collector. He has several pieces of very high quality.
I will try to get a picture of this piece but am not sure how to download onto this site. Will have to have to look at this more closely to find out how but I'll figure it out and you'll be pleasantly surprised at the quality.0 -
let me see if i can give you an example. say you own a 1965 ford mustang. you owned it all your life. you put mag wheels on it. you didnt like the way it accelerated so you changed out the engine. 20 years later, the back window took a baseball, so you changed it out. you got tired of the sun glaring in your eyes, so you tinted all the windows. tires wore out 5 times and you put new ones on it. you drove it and put about 90,000 miles on it but wax & polished it every day and kept it garaged. if you were to bring it to a car show, it would be classified as a running mustang. parked next to you is a 65 mustang that still had the original tires on the car and has the original paint, original sales sticker in the window, and has 12 miles on it from driving it off trailers everywhere it goes. which do you think a collector is going to buy first? same car...different level of condition. you may have a very wonder colt, but unless we ALL KNOW who did the work, its no different than putting mag wheels on a 65 mustang. mags may make you feel your mustang is better with them on, but not everyone else mag wheels. hope this helps.
