"Red W" Winchester

Pardon my ignorance.......Can anyone explain what is meant by the term "Red W" in reference to a Winchester rifle?

  The best I can determine, the red W is one type of cap for the pistol grip on some Winchester firearms. I have some on both model 88 and model 100. I am sure they were used on many other models. I am not sure if they add value to the firearm.
