"DEFEND MYSELF WITH"??? How many do you expect to charge you at one time??Usually the mere sight of any gun deters an attack.Unless you are a drug lord or some other IMPORTANT figure, you need only token defense to twart any attack.Proven fact, a double barrelled shotgun stops EVERYBODY dead in their tracks, unless they want to die. Then, pull the triggers. END OF CHAPTER. Cold, you bet your life.. But who asked them to invade your space.Good luck with your quest to find the best.modoc

AN SAR-1 is an AK-47 and is the only one I am aware of in that price range. There is a 99% chance that the one in your local gun shop is an SAR-1. Not many other choices until you are over $500.

MODOC, maybe he needs it to protect against gun grabbing liberals....

Thousands of guys have AK-variants, & most are happy with them. Whether you want one for collecting, shooting, or defense is your choice; just choose wisely & practice good gun safety. Always keep your guns in a safe; if you don't have one, make that your first priority.

The SAR-1 is a good rifle, but there are better ones (for more money.) I don't know what a "regular" AK is. You should read the comments just below your posting on the same subject.

The "best" price for any given gun may not be available to you; it depends upon where you live, & whether you have a local FFL willing to accept shipment from out of state. Most new shooters would do well buying from a local gun shop, even if you pay a little more. You will get to hold the gun before you buy, you will get expert advice, & assistance if you have problems. If you want something he doesn't have, he can order it for you.

Well I use to agree with modoc on the 12g thing. I am a paramedic in a city and have seen lots of shootings. I saw a guy get shot point blank with 12ga buck shot in the stomach. It tore a hole in his skin, passed through without the shot spreading out. You could see all the fller inside him on the xray. He had about a half inch hole in his right hip were the shot had exited and the wad was still hanging out of it. Other than haveing a big hole in him the guy was fine, he was stable and alert and talking to me. I am almost thinking some 4 or 6 shot would be a better load that close but I dont know for sure. BTW I have a Mak-90 and love it. I have had it for 10 years and have never had a problem with it, even though I dont clean it as much as I should.

well thank you for the advice, i noticed you said the mak-90 was nicer and for a little more, could you guys tell me some good online dealers and also some good rifles in the $500 range. I am very careful about safety but i was interested in an ak because of cheap price and that they are well known. Please give me some other suggestions. Thank you

    Check out:

I have 2 Romanian AK's; Sar1 and a Wasr10. I find them to be fun guns to shoot and modify. You can spend more on Bulgarians or use that money on mags and accessories for the Romanian.
