SKS Questions
Hey guys, just bought an SKS and i have a couple of questions, first one.. Since they lifted the AWB can i have my bayonet that came with the rifle and a hi-cap magainze or is that a no no?.. i was reading something a while back and someone told me that was illegal atleast pre awb lifting. Anyways, if it's not are there any good hi-cap magazines that you fellas would reccomend getting.. i've heard the cheaper ones have problems with jamming. Any input would be greatly apperciated.

Finally bought a Yugo sks and figured how to break it down to remove the cosmoline, I noticed there was grease on the piston, should I replace it after cleaning? I oiled the gas tube, should I remove all the lube in there? Or is wiping it out enough? I didn't get a manual with it, so just kinda winging it. Any help or suggestions would sure be appreciated. Forget detachable mags. They aren't any good. Look around the forums. Get some stripper clips and practice. They are about as fast and much lighter/smaller and they are only a quarter apiece. 0 -
I think you can. If it came with the rifle, I doubt there is any problem. When in doubt, replace parts you know to be imported with American--for some reason, the government thinks American parts make it less evil. My buddy bought some SKS mags at a gunshow last month. Two of the jammed. 10 minutes later he had 'em working fine, and he only needed a pair of pliers. Don'tget anything plastic--steel mags may cost more, but if something goes wrong, they're easier to fix.

Yea, i've been praticing with stripper clips problem is when i stick them in the slot, and start pushing about 90% of the time they start to jam and the rounds don't feed in.. so i have to back the bolt and push em and they eventually go in.. :-/ 0 -
The assault weapon ban didn't change anything concerning SKS carbines. If you add a detachable mag, the bayonet and lug must go. At least that's my opinion. The rules have never been crystal clear on SKS's and appear muddier than ever now. I agree with the post recommending stripper clips. Give them a try. You might be surprised how well they work. 0 -
After you insert the stripper clip containing the live rounds into the stripper clip slot built into the SKS, make sure the clip is in all the way and straight. Then keeping your thumb as close to the stripper clip as you can, and also of course directly on top of the very back (primer end) of the top round, push STRAIGHT down with a firm motion starting somewhat slow at first then quickly speed up your push and cotinue until all the rounds are in the mag. You almost have to push as if you were going to push your thumb into the mag as well as the rounds.
Works really well for me.

This is my understanding about the AWB
With the ban, a semi-auto rifle produced after 1994 could not have 2 or more of the following: muzzle break, pistol grip, bayonet lug, folding stock, and at least one more feature, I don't remember what it was, and think there might have been more features. But the rifle could have ONE of those features, so long as it didn't contain another.
Now that the ban has expired, you are free to do whatever the hell you want with your rifle in regards to those features... so long as your state doesn't prohibit it (no longer federal law).
Don't hold me 100% to that, but that is the best I understand it after reading up on it.0 -
The sunset of the AWB didn't affect the SKS because it's an import. Part 922 has not been affected at all. The only thing the sunset really does is make hi-cap mags legal to manufacture. Check the ATF web site www.atf.gov. There is info and a link on their home page. 0 -
Loose the bayonet and lug. I use metal and plastic clips; 5 rd, 20 rd, and 30 rd. I like the plastic.... they were easier to adjust to fit and make work. And, you will have to adjust whether they are metal or plastic....

Semiautomatic Assault Weapon Update
By statute, the prohibitions relating to semiautomatic assault weapons and large capacity ammunition feeding devices expired on September 13, 2004. As a result, certain sections of the Gun Control Act, 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44, and its implementing regulations, 27 CFR Part 478, are no longer in effect.
Squeeter151: I went the whole 9 yards with my SKS's fitting hi-caps, etc., and after it was all said and done if you want a dependable hi-cap get a fitted non-aftermarket fixed 20 rd and reload/top off with stripper clips for dependable firing. If you are just playing around with your SKS I have quite a few hi-caps I want to get rid of.

I have both high capacity detachable mags and the original 10 round Russian fixed magazine. Both work fine in my Russian SKS. I go back and forth on what I use for some variation but I can tell you the fixed 10 round stripper clip mag that comes with the weapon is more reliable than the aftermarket detachable magazines.
You have to get rid of the bayonet lug to legally use detachable magazines (not that anyone really cares if you do and most cops don't know what the law is on that aspect of a SKS). Sks's are fun reliable rifles

As you can see many people don't like the detachable magazines, so here is my argument for the detachable high cap.
How many times would you have to reload a 10 or 20 round fixed magazine with strippers versus one 50 round high cap detachable? It will take significantly less time to put a high cap in the rifle, than it would to load the fixed 10 round magazine 5 times or the fixed 20 round 2.5 times to get the 50 rounds. The detachables are not easy to load, but the stripper clips aren't easy to use either and there are reliable feeding high caps. I have several.
This whole discussion is rather stupid anyway because nobody is going to need over 10 rounds to hunt or for defense. Nobody is going to use the SKS with an extended mag for anything but target practice and plinking so the argument doesn't make a bit of sense. So go with what you want to do.
