    If you shoot 4 different powders at a grain less than max with the same bullet how do you sort what loads to continue the process of load development?

    I know nothing about muzzle loaders my friend, but I know that Hoppes #9 is you're best bet for Barrel cleaning, for anything else like triggers, bolts, and gun powder residue, use hoppes #9 and a toothbrush

    What are you shooting? If it's flintlock, you have to shoot blackpowder--the substitutes won't light well. If you use caps or primers, then by all means, go with Triple 7. I shoot Pyrodex and it's crap--filthy, almost as bad as the real stuff--the only difference is Pyrodex is not classified as an explosive under federal law (the real stuff is). Triple 7 has no sulphur, so it cleans up with water, and doesn't smell like rotten eggs. However, it costs 50% more than Pyrodex, but IMHO, it's worth it. However, read the directions carefully, cause it's a much higher energy powder, so you use anywhere between 15 and 25% less than you would in black powder. BTW, sulphur is what corrodes your barrel, so if you forget to clean up after T 7, your accuracy will suck, but your barrel will survive.

    To clean up black or Pyrodex, use hydrogen peroxide--it costs a fraction as much as everything else, and works 10 times better (still smells awful though). I cleaned my .50 cal the other day with two peroxide patches. Using barrrel solvents, it took 2 hours the last time. If you clean with peroxide, dry out your barrel well, and oil it well--peroxide will rust it faster than almost anything else. I don't know that Hoppe's will work, given the vastly different composition of muzzleloading propellants--I've never tried it, so I'm only speculating.

    Simple Green works very well for cleaning black powder and pyrodex also

    Peroxide and denatured alcohol in a 50% to 50% mixture cleans all forms of BLACK and it's substitutes better than any other cleaner.If you use caps on a nipple it really works well.Use a bulb from earwash set on the nipple to clean the flash hole while cleaning the barrel.Just pour the barrel full of the mixture with the bulb over the nipple, when you send the rod and patch down the full barrel the bulb will swell with the extra solution,wait 2 minutes and dump out the barrel.One clean patch,one oiled patch, and you are DONE.Good hunting.modoc

    well the first i will probably have out in the field is a repli .44 navy that i got as a "thank you" from a chemical company i deal with at work. then if im back on line with one i will probably make a replacement spring so i can get my .67 flint pistol working...
    and i always did enjoy building those kit guns from dixon...
    i think i just heard the wife groaning at the thought of a pa rifle accross the dineing table for a few weeks lol
