Cantilever barrel or not.
I'm preparing to buy a Mossberg 500 or 835 12ga. w/ 24in. ported, fully rifled barrel that is on a great sale. I've always used iron sights till this point but have a Redfield 3x-9x on a Win .243 I'll mount on the Mossberg. My Question is should I pass the sale price and go for a cantilever scope mount barrel? I'll only be using the gun 2 weeks out of the year for gun season but don't know if just light bumping of the barrel in and out of the field and tree is enough to not want the scope mounted on top of the receiver instead of the barrel?

I have a scope on my 870 with the reciever mount and the scope stays pretty true even after swapping the bbl. Just have to make sure the bbl is good and tight. I can even swap from my turkey to rifled bbl with litte adjustment, but it is only a 2x scope. I think a 3-9x might be a different story and a little much for even sabots. As for bumping, the scope will be the most fragile regardless of the mount.

I dunno about mounts, but I've always been told that you need a scope specially designed for shotguns (something about different relief). I dunno if it's true or not/
