Is a Saiga conversion to AK configuration legal?
I saw one advertised for sale with pistol grip and tubular non folding, stock. The barrel was also shortened but still over legal length.

As I am sure many already know the Russian Saiga rifle can be converted to AK configuration. What I wanted to know is if a Saiga was converted to an AK (pistol grip, and used regular AK mags) and had the following U.S. made parts: trigger, sear, hammer, gas piston, mag follower, mag floor plate, pistol grip, and stock. Would the rifle be considered U.S. made (eight U.S. parts) and if so would a folding stock be legal? 0 -
I don't know the answer but I'd sure like to find a pistol grip stock that will fit my Saiga .308. It has the regular wood stock on it now.

The Saiga is a regular AK with the sporting stock and trigger gaurd moved to the rear. To convert a Saiga to AK configuration 1. take the rifle apart 2. grind the heads off the rivets that hold the trigger gaurd and plate between the trigger gaurd and bottom of receiver then use a punch to drive the rivets out (do not grind the heads off the rivets that hold the mag catch) 3. grind the heads off the to pins in the lower rear of the receiver that the trigger and trigger transfer bar pivot on (you will be able to see what I am talking about when you look in the receiver the trigger and the lever that works like a see saw when you move work the trigger) after grinding the head off the pins push out and remove the trigger and transfer bar 4. As you will be able to see now the Saiga is a regular AK and the original trigger is still in place with the finger extension ground off. Next push the pin out that holds the forward trigger and remove it 5. you will need the U.S. parts to make the rifle legal so also remove the pin that the hammer pivots on and remove the hammer 6. replace the hammer, trigger, and sear with a U.S. made ones 7. you will have to dremel a feed ramp in the bottom of the chamber to aid in feeding the cartridges (look at another AK and do the same being careful not to remove to much metal) 8. bremel or file the part of the mag catch that contacts the mag just enough for it to securely catch the mag (you will also see what I am talking about when you try to lock in a standard AK mag) 9. cut the front of the trigger gaurd in the flat space between the bottom but a little above where it would have met the receiver the cut off the rear behind the rivet hole 10. place the trigger gaurd on the receiver and align the rear rivet hole with the hole in the bottom of the receiver and attach with a rivet or short metal screw and nut 11. use a mig welder to weld the front of the trigger gaurd to the mag catch like the AK then use a dremel and file to smooth it up like one piece 12. buy a U.S. stock set and pistol grip screw and retaining nut and reassemble the rifle (the hole will already be in the receiver were the AK grip retaining nut goes and a standard AK stock for the stamped receiver mount right in place of the sporter stock 13. touch up all the places you ground and the bottom of the receiver were you removed the plate. NOTE if you are only going to use the original Saiga mags you will not have to dremel a feed ramp in the bottom of the chamber or the mag catch. Here is a list of the U.S. parts you will need: 1.trigger and sear 2.hammer 3.gas piston 4. butstock 5. pistol grip 6.pistol grip screw and retaining nut 7. (optional) mag follower and floor plate. You will need a dremel tool with a flex head extension, a cone shaped grinding wheel, a small high speed metal cutting bit, flat head screw driver, mig welder, a good vise and pipe wrench for changeing the gas pistons and good high temp semi flat black paint for touching up the bare spots. Anyone with a little mechanical ability should have no problems makeing the conversion and after a close comparison of the Saiga and regular AK you will see the it is a simple conversion. If you are looking to biuld a AK cheap you will be better off to by a Romanian since the cost of the rifle and parts alone will cost close to $400 and the the conversion will take a good day if you are not set up to do one but you will will have a much better AK than the Romanian with far better workmanship and quality. You may also exchange the entire trigger gaurd/mag catch from the AK if you dont have a mig welder but I think this way is the most simple and best looking. 0 -
Im in the middle of converting my Saiga 12 gauge to pistol grip.Im waiting on parts as some are hard to find right now.The trigger control group has three US parts,pistol grip,buttstock is all you need for the 12. Go to www. Saiga-12.com ,lots of info there.
