    the wadcutter needs to be able to punch a hole in a sheet of paper, the other loads are for making something have a bad day. Mass off bullet x Velocity squared = energy

    Well, now I understand. I just was unsure of the figures published because there was such a disparity for the rounds. OK, I'm sold on the
    LRN 38 special. Thanks much for the information.

    Beantole, if you are looking for a self-defense round, the 158gr RN is pretty damn poor, as - sadly - the widows of many LEOs can testify. If you are looking for practice ammo, it's fine. For self defense, especially in a .38, choose a load with a bullet which will perform better (most anything will).
