whats the deal with drop free mags for pistols? are they any good?

drop free for what pistols? All drop free means, in theory, is that the mags will drop out without assistance when you hit the mag release. Has nothing to do with real quality.
Some junk mags may drop free, other quality mags may not.
Are you talking about Glock drop free mags?

They are just as good as non-drop free, just faster when doing reloads.
The early Glock mags were non-drop free as that was the requirement of the Austrian military who Glock made guns for during their earlier years, and probably still do.
Since Glocks became very popular in the american law enforcement community and we prefered the drop free style mags like the 1911A1 style pistols used, Glock began making the drop-free for the US market.
The difference between the Glock drop-free and non-drop free is the metal inner liner goes all the way around the drop-free mags and around only the back and sides of the non drop-free. When the non drop-free is loaded it tends to swell slightly in the mag well of the pistol, thus keeping it from falling free. The reliability of the 2 versions is the same.
