    Winchester Model D Military Rifle
    Overall length 46-3/8 inches,barrel length 26 inchs,caliber 7.62mm. Walnut stock with blued receiver,barrel,magazine housing and furniture. Receiver stamped with the serial number and the Winchester proofmark. A total of 500 Model D rifles were shipped to Russia for trials in March of 1917.
    The rifle looks like a standard Model 1914/1917 Enfield. Haveing been sent to Russia I would think that the caliber would have been the 7.62X53R Russian service cartridge.

    Good Morning Dave,
    The 'Standard Catalog of Winchester' published in 2000, has this to say about the Model D. "Prospective purchasers are strongly advised to secure an expert appraisal prior to acquistion. Due to the recent identification of this model pricing schedules have yet to be established."
    Just because 500 were sent to Russia does not mean that others were not made. Since these rifles look just like a standard Model 1914/1917 it could be that there are other Model D's still around and unidentified. Since the Model 1914 was chambered for the British .303 Enfield, it would have been no trick to chamber the rifle for the Russian rimmed round.
    Your question caught my curiosity. Do you have one of these rifles or do you have a line on one?

    There's another variation of the P-14/1917/mod 30s that you don't see very often.
    I have an action that looks like a Model 30 that's marked "Model of 1934, Remington, 7MM"and drilled on the right rear side for a receiver sight.(?)
    It was made for Venezuela and probably a few other countries.

    The action you have was actually made for Honduras
    and was in 7MM. Very scarce rifles as only about 3,000
    were made and saw heavy usage. The side holes are not original
    as the rifle had a rear sight mounted on the barrel.

    You're right. I saw a complete rifle about 3 years ago and I'm having brain fade, remember now that you mentioned it, it was Honduras.

    It's the only model that I've ever seen with the caliber inscribed on the left side of the front ring.

    It was at the Big Reno Gun Show and the guy didn't want to sell it.
