It depends on your scopes "Objective Diameter",i.e. the larger the diameter the higher the rings you will need for clearence.

This data came out of Brownells catalog for scopes with various Objective Diameters.

    1), For scopes with "O. D.'s" up to 1 3/4", you can use rings with a height between .090 & .164.

2), Above 1 3/4", you need rings, at least .332

    3), 2 3/8" "O. D" requires .560

Go to Brownells on-line catalog www.brownells.com and/or call one of their Techs at 800-741-0015 for more info.

my objective diameter is 40mm - So, for Leupold scope mounts would I need a low, med, or high? I dont think it says on the packages exactly what height each one is. Thanks

If the bases are "weaver" style then you can use any "weaver" style ring with them. My favorites are the Weaver 4x4 rings, these have more edges to grip the scope body and they don't slip even on my 8mm RemMag and 338 WinMag. Med high in these would be excess, lows would probably work. They are a fraction of the price of Leupold's weaver style quick release rings.

What rufe-snow might have meant was the outside of the objective. It is my understading that the 40mm is the inside (lens side) of the objective and depending on the maker/material the outside objective could be thicker/thinner than another 3-9X40 from a different maker. That said I would think the mediums for sure would work and the Lows probably will work.

I suggest taking it to a gun store and seeing if they will let you try medium and the lows to see what you need (or like).

40mm equals 1.6 inches, I would go with the rings with a height of .164, this would be the medium height . As the previous poster noted,If at all possible try to check out the medium rings at a local store to see if they provide enough clearence.
