The original predecessor of the Model 10 dates to 1899. It was the S & W Military & Police.

The "Model 10" marked revolvers date to 1957.

Your 10-5 dates to 1962 when they increased the width of the front sight by .025. The "-5" signifies the fifth engineering and/or production change done on the basic Model 10.

The value of your revolver would be based on factory original condition and finish.

Condition being equal ... a pre-Model 10 should carry a few more dollars value, with the value difference growing relative to the age difference.

And in the numbered models the "5 screw" (pre-Model 10-4) should have a few dollars difference in value.

The M&P and subsequent Model 10 is/was Smith's "Bread and Butter" gun. Millions have been made and the model continues to be made.

If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!
