Romanian AK47 - Any Good
Just got a flyer from SOG advertising the Romanian Ak47 with flash suppressor and bayonet (now legal) with accessories for same price as the AWB era AK's.
Are these AK's worth while buying?
Hard to resist the price especially now since they are not plotically correct and just to spite our future president Kerry.
Thanks.
Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.

Well Paq, here's my opinion.. Romanian AK's kick the crap outta our military rifles any day of the week. You can thrown an ak, drag it with a car, drop it in the mud, and pour fruit punch threw it, and it'll still cycle rounds better than any of our stuff.. And for 400 bucks? Yeah it's deffiently worth it. I'd recommend an AK any day of the week. Just for plinkin? And or home defence, AK's are deffiently worth it, and they are super reliable.
It's not war untill someone breaks out the .50 calibers.0 -
My buddy just got one and it is one of the most fun gun I hace ever shot. rounds are cheap and easy to find. The only bad problem is the length they are a little short but you can get an extension for about twenty bucks. My opinion, very good buy. 0 -
Romanian SARs are quite good. I'd stay away from the WASRs if possible. The WASRs were meant to be low-cap and needed to have their mag well milled out to accomodate double-stack mags.

The Romanian AK's are fine for what they are intended for but as far as fit and finish there is a lot to be desired. The finish is poor almost like a flat black paint. The gas block is crooked on a lot of them. The wood has a poor fit and finish. If you are not worried about looks and only care about dependability they are well worth the money. Since the ban has ended the prices seem to be falling and if another ban does not pass (in wich case all AK's will likely increase in value 100% or more) I would look for them to get even cheaper than they are now. For a better made AK you may consider paying more for a Russian Saiga AK conversion, Chinese MAK 90 converted for the pistol grip w/ but stock, or an Arsenal milled receiver AK. These can be found in the $400 - $600 bracket in excellent condition and are twice the rifle the Romanian AK is. 0 -
I have a SAR-3 the .223 varrient. I depend on it and it does everything I want. I have put an ACE foldong stock on it and a Vortex Flash supressor and black plastic fore arm. It is my truck gun. My 2 cents [8D]

love mine. Its not accurate, its not "cute". BUt, it goes bang everytime--no matter what.
I would echo some of what has been said and contradict some of what has been said. Make sure you know if you are buying a WASR or an SAR. The SARs are intended for double stack high capacity mags. THe WASRs were made to accept only single stack (10rounders) but were converted by the various importers--century, ect---to take double stack. SOme people have reported problems with these feeding from some mags and most report a "wobble" in the mag when seated. If they work, this doesn't effect performance, but some find it disconcerting.
As to fit and finish...well, most are sort of ugly but there are nice ones out there. MIne has nice almost purple wood. Also, there are plenty of synthtic aftermarket stock sets that will make your rifle look pretty good. Buy one, buy two if you can. IMHO, there will be a new ban at some point and you can bet that the AK will be publicenemy number 1.0 -
Have to agree with Robo on this one. SAR is your friend. WASR = POS.
I have a SAR-1, and believe it or not, it jammed on me. It wasn't hard to remedy, though, once you pull the spring out and whack it with a hammer (Do as I say, not as I do).
Other than that, it works fine. It's a lot louder rifle, and has more recoil than my buddy's SKS--I don't know why.
Long story short, get a SAR-1 and have fun.

If you are going to go the WASR10 route I'd reccomend buying one from
http://www.ohiorapidfire.com
ORF cleans up their WASR's and charges you a little extra for them. I'd say it's worth it after filing the hell out of my wasr10 hicap just to get it to reliably/smoothly take double stack mags.
