.17 HMR barrel..worth the money?
I currently own a Ruger mk77/17. It is "right out of the box" plus a trigger job and consistently hits a 1/2 in. spinner at 100 yrds. I was thinking of buying a fluted bull barrel but am wondering just how much it will improve the gun. I also would need to find a stock to accept the barrel...anyone know where to look? Thanks for your time

Well hivolt, I really don't know much about .17s, honestly I hate the damn things, but, a fluted bull barrel, all that would do, it wouldn't really increase accuracy, it'd just stop the barrel from getting hot, and forming different, and throwing off you're rifleing. So basically, after 500 rounds of constant fireing, it'd still maintain it's current ground as if a cold barrel would.
It's not war untill someone breaks out the .50 calibers.0 -
Thanks...The barrel does get really hot after you put a few rounds through it. Any suggestion on where to find a stock?

If your heating up the barrel and your still shooting the group sizes stated ... why spend the money. Barrel and stock your going to have at least $400 of expense ... put another couple bucks with it and buy another rifle, say a .204 or whatever other caliber has appeal to you. 
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -

Bench rest your rifle and shoot at a 100 yard target. If you can achieve 0.5 inch groups at 100 yards, my advice would be to leave the rifle alone. Your rifle won't shoot better than that without spending a lot of money and may even shoot worse!
I have customized a Ruger 10/22 with a Jarvis factory contour target barrel. The Jarvis barrel is a full-out target barrel but will fit into the factory stock without any modification. Therefore, the price for a new stock is avoided. This 10/22 rifle can do less than an inch at 100 yards.
Here is a photo of the barrel in the reciever for your info. Note the unmodified factory stock.

I just read an article about the new Kimber rifles chambered in .17M2 that have just been released. Everyone of the rifles tested shot less than 1.0 inch at 100 yards. Most groups were around 0.5 inch and one group averaged .44 inch. It is impressive performance from a $1000.00 rifle.

I'd leave the ruger alone. It sounds as though it is shooting just fine, to me. 0
