    Some guns are designed to be seperated into 2 or more parts, so they are more easily transportable. Savage made a take-down version of their 99 lever-action, but most of the take-downs that come to mind are custom jobs such as H-S Precision and Wild West guns. Can anyone think of other factory take-downs?

    Two other take-down guns I can think of are the Browning .22 auto and the Savage Model 29A .22 pump. As the previous replier noted, the "take-down" design was developed to make the rifle easier to fit into a backpack, etc. and take with you on trips to the outdoors.

    Assuming your question refers to a takedown model of a breech loading gun, it is a gun that can be separated in two pieces to reduce the overall length for storage or shipping. Some guns, primarily pumps shotguns may be made with or without the 'takedown' feature. When separated, the barrel, magazine tube and pump handle come off as one component and the stock and receiver the other part. Take downs are also seen in older quality designs of .22 rifles with pump, lever and some semi auto actions.

    Double barrel shotguns are all takedown model but never bear the name because it is an understood part of their construction. Many semi auto shotguns take down by virtue of their design but, like double bbls, are rarely referred to as such. Hope this helps.

    winchesters are famous for takedown features...the model 12, the model 61, some 94's, etc.. you can recognize them by a screw or knob on the side of the receiver just forward of the ejection port.

    Some takedowns I have now or have owned: Marlin 39 .22 lever action, old Remington .22 semi auto dates back into 1920s or before, early teens Remington Model 12 .22 pump, Winchesters 61 pump .22, Model 1912 & 1897 shotguns. bobski is right, a lot of other Winchester models.

    Winchester made a VAST number of their firearms with the Takedown feature... starting with the Model 1873 (22 caliber only). Generally speaking, the Takedown feature adds quite a bit of value to most of the collectable Winchester rifles (Model 1885, 1886, 1892, 1894, 1895).

    Additionally, with the exception of approximately the first 15,000 Model 1890 slide-actions, all of them were takedowns, as were 100% of the Model 1906/06, 61, and 62s. The Self-loading Models 1903, 1905, 1907, 1910, 1911, and 63 were all Takedowns. The vast majority of the Model 1897/97 slide-action shotguns, and ALL of the Model 1912/12 and Model 42 shotguns were Takedowns.

    Lest we forget a notorious recent one.......
    the Marlin model 70p Papoose. I only say notorious as it seemed most came back to the shops after a while. I don't know if it was a design problem or an owner problem.
