700 rem question
Im looking to buy a 700 rem for longrange target shooting and money is a big factor. My question is which out of the box rem 700 will be best bang for the buck? the 700vs, 700 police or the 700 vls? the only major difference that i can find is that the 700vls has a woodstock without any mention of an alloy bedding installed. So far it seems like the 700vs is the best bang for the buck. what do you all think about it? i want it in a .308

For what you described you wanted to do with it, I would recommend a synthetic stock and a heavy fluted barrel. Luckily for you, with the .308 you have many choices in a good long-range rifles from many
manufacturers.
Remington offers it in thier PSS line, thier VS, thier LV-VS, and tactical lineup.
Since money is tight I would sure check out some of the other guns on the market as well. Savage has impressed me more and more everytime I am around the newer ones (I don't own one yet, but will soon).
Another gun that has impressed me lately is the sporter contour Howa 1500. A buddy of mine bought one and it will shoot just as accurate as my much more expensive Remington 700. I know I would sure sell my Remington 700 BDL SS DM in .300 win mag if I could come out even close to what I've got in it!
There are many more but I would look at those two first. Just do a search here on GunBroker. Use your key words like synthetic, and/or 308, fluted, etc. and you'll find a ton of different rifles and you can read about the different options available.

If you are not consumed by the looks of the 700, I agree with Bambihunter. The Howa 1500/Weatherby Vanguard (same rifle) is basically a Remington 700 with lots of improvements for alot less money.
Do a search on this site for Vanguard and you will find alot of positive info plus a dealer was listed with really good prices.

If you are go to shoot truly long range target,you are going to need a cartridge other then the 308 Winchester as you will be useing bullets in the 190-220 grain range. IMO,the .308 just does't start these bullets fast enough to maintain good accuracy at 800 and 1000 yards. Years ago when I was shooting in N.R.A. long range competition everyone was useing the .30-06 or one of the 300 magnums. I used a bull barreled Remington 700 chambered for the 30-06. The Remingtons are chambered with a long throat so that heavy bullets can be seated well out in order to make more powder space in the case. I know that you will not find this in the Savage as they are notorious for being short throated. The Howa I don't know about,but it something to keep in mind. 0 -
There is no other action with the amount of aftermarket parts that the 700rem has. As far as out of the box,...I havn't ever seen any make of rifle, which let's say out of 10 random samples,..would ever OUTPERFORM the 700rem (on the average). I would say there are plenty that will shoot as well but usually cost more (Sako for one) The 700 is one of the strongest actions available with a design allowing it to be bedded very easily and solidly. Most any gunsmith can work on the rem action as tooling is also far more prevalent for this action than all others. The trigger,..in the hands of a competent gunsmith is one of the best available before a custom trigger.
Cheap rifles have cheap resale values and less parts availability. I owm many actions,..but by far the best out of the box action on the unit to unit basis always proves to me to be the 700. Unless it has a fatal manufacturing flaw,..the only reason it won't go well under MOA with factory ammo resides with the shooter,..not the rifle.
As far as the model,...the VS or VLS or PSS in 308 will all shoot equally as well. I suggest a Sendero SF in a good magnum caliber if you wish to shoot long range with an out of the box rig with sub MOA groups out past 500yds. Just My .02

The reason that i wanted it in the .308 was because it would offer me the chance to shoot nato surplus rounds is so desired. I have a savage 116ss in the 300 rem ultra mag now and would rather have something that is a little more fun to shoot. As far as distance go's id be happy at 500 to 700yds range. Do you all think im out in left field with this? 0 -

A gunsmith friend of mine told me recently that several of his customers that shoot various types of bench-rest are moving away from the 30/338, 300 Win and other magnums and having 308s built, for shooting out to 600 yards. It seems they can shoot them more accurately. Since the distance is know, the bullet drop can be calculated, so the main advantage of the faster bullet is less critical wind reading. The most common action sent to him is the 700. He gets others, but they are much more expensive. His main complaint with Remingtons is that they seem to have a wide amount of acceptable variance in the attaching the barrel to the action, so trueing things up is a common adjustment. 0 -
In my opinion the Remington 700 VLS is the most for the money .They shoot with about any of the Rem . models right out of the box.
If you adjust the trigger and acra-gel the action into the stock most of them shoot as good as you would want. Ive got customers that are very happy with this model. They get fantastic groups with the 308 ,243 , and 223 in this model.0 -
Ok here I go against the grain again. No offense meant.
The Remington 700 is not an excellent rifle to say the least . Take a look at this video on Lilja's web site http://www.riflebarrels.com/ . Folks that was a brand new barrel your looking at in that video. Its trash . The Remington 700 barrel may be fine for hunting but leaves alot to be desired for long range target shooting.
As far as the action its solid , but all it is [ like every new bolt action ] , is a Mauser design that has been butchered to allow for cheap and fast production. The Mauser 98 design has never been improved upon.
You could buy a 98 action [ military or commercial ] have it custom barreled and stocked and have about the same amount in it as a heavy barreled 700 [ pss etc. ]. then my friend you would have a custom gun built for you that will out perform ANY out of the box rifle. they are an endless line up of custom parts for both the 700 and the 98's. all I'm saying is a custom 98 would be a lot less expensive to build, compared to the money one would spend to get a 700 shooting as good.
As for the 308 its an excellent choice out to 1000 yards. Provided you have good glass and know the range. If the military trusted it for a long range round I feel confident in saying I do to !0 -
He mentioned he wanted to be able to shoot cheap nato .308 ammo. What about getting an 8x57 Mauser caliber (either military surplus or the 8 mm Mauser in the Remington model 700) and be able to shoot the 6 cents per round 1977 Yugo production surplus military ammo? Doesn't the 8 mm perform about as well as the 30-06?

I respect everyons opinion on the matter and would like to thank everyone for there input. I have a good gunsmith that is in the know on the 700's and i think that im going to stick with the 700. Im concidering the 700vs .308 and am pretty set on it. But i need to put glass on the weapon. I would like to stay at or below 300.00 and have no preference to brand what do you all think? I would really like an adjustable power somewhere in the up to 12x range what are your thoughts? 0
