Contact Remington they MIGHT? have some sort of exchange/rebuild program available, or give you some guidance on who might be able to fix it.

Thanks Rufe, i'm just trying to gather some info on how to get it fixed. I'm trying to get rid of mine, and it seems everyone's turned down because the myth of a 740, 742, that they chew themselves out. But seriously now.. That's probably after you shoot 2,000 rounds out of the gun one day, and let it sit for 3 years with out cleaning it, but what gun wouldn't goto hell if that happened?[:D]

It's not war untill someone breaks out the .50 calibers.

The only way to fix one with a worn out reciever is replace the reciever if you can find one in good shape.Remington wont repair 742"s anymore. The ones we have sent back to them for the past 2 or 3 yrs. they offer to send a 7400 new as a replacement for about the wholesale price of a new one.If you want a new one this is a way to get it wholesale.
Working on one of these with a lot of wear is an exercise in futility. It will drive you to foul language and strong drink.

A local shop was offering to do a conversion to a pump action, but by the time they finished it, you could throw it away, buy either a newer good used or add a hundred and get a new gun. I think I remember $350 to $400 to do the job. I don't think anyone took them up on it.

I'd be willing to bet you could use a 760 receiver and just dremel a slot for the handle along the right side of the receiver.

Contact Remington. This happened to a customer of mine who bought a 742 from me that was trashed inside. Customer knew there were problems with the rifle and I made him a deal on it.

He contacted Remington. They asked him to send in the rifle. He did. They offered him an exchange for a new Model Four. There was some boot to be paid, but it was a lot less than a new rifle. He was happy.

Nunn: That Remington offering was discontinued more than two years ago. In the past I sent in several for replacement for various customers. Seems it was return the 742 plus $275. and they would exchange for a new 7400.
