Is Howa a well made gun?

I have never owned a Howa, but have read and ben told that they are very good guns, does anybody have a well informed opinion concerning these guns, Specifically in the .223 or 22-250 chamberings! I'm considering buying one as my first varmint/predator rifle, please help?

    I have been engaged in the business of losing money gunsmithing for twenty five years. The only time that I have ever have a Howa in my shop was EXTREME neglect, or for customization. One of the most fun rifles that I own is a Howa 1500, .308, cut down to 18" in a modified Weatherby Vanguard stock. Yes, the reciever, bolt, and trigger system is made in the same factory that produces the Weatherby. Dollar for dollar, the Howa rifle is exceptional.

    Howa is one of the few companies that show that inexpensive and cheap are not the same. They are well made guns at a decent price.

    I bought my 1500 as a barreled action and glas bedded it in a Boyd's JRS Classic laminate stock. Shoots way better than I do. The action has some really nice design elements. You will certainly save some money on a Howa, and you will not be sorry.

    I am not a gunsmith. I have to agree with the comments made by the others. If you buy it, you will not be disappointed.

    My experience with the Howa is the same as stated by the others. I would however point out that the .223 and 22-250 are built on the "short" action, like for the .308 and such. There are trimer and lighter rifles out there that sport a true "micro" action. Saco and the CZ-527 come to mind. The CZ is not a big dollar rifle and looks to be a real contender if you can get past the protruding removable box mag.

    I agree with everyone the howa is a well made unit i've owned a 300 weatherby vangaurd that (with hand loads)was capable of 1 inch groups at 200 yards and 1.25 at 300 yards.This was all from a light sporter.
    You might want to think of a 243 for a varmit cartrige, I bet a accurized 243 howa thumbhole heavy barrel is capable of .2's.

    The Remington 700 has been a standard for years.

    If Remington made an updated, and improved model. let's call it the 700 Plus, it would be copied after the Howa.

    Weatherby was most certainly a forward thinking company.

    I may be stating the obvious but the Howa 1500 and the Weatherby Vanguard are the same rifle (just like the Chevy Tracker and Suzuki Sidekick in vehicles). Howa makes both and Weatherby sticks there name on the Vanguard. If you do a search for vanguard on this forum you will find excellent info on the rifle. I did before I bought mine.

    The trigger is great and the accuracy is gauranteed to be less than a 1.5" moa when using premium ammunition. Normally will shoot about .75" moa groups (or better). Excellent buy.
